In hosting this seventh edition online, we connected a wider global audience, allowing us to come together as a community committed to sustainable transport. Day 4 at #WUF12: Advancing #GenderResponsive #UrbanMobility 🌍 On the final day of the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt , Kalpana Viswanath facilitated the session 'Mainstreaming Leave No One Behind in India - Reimagining Urban Frameworks from the Lens of Gender and Disability Inclusion'. The panel focused on the increasing challenges faced by marginalized groups—such as persons with disabilities, women, children, and the elderly—in accessing essential services like transportation, healthcare, and education. Discussions highlighted how rapid urbanization, further strained by the COVID-19 pandemic, has intensified the pressure on infrastructure. Panelists emphasized the importance of human-centered policies and the Leave No One Behind principle, advocating for gender and disability considerations to be integrated into urban planning to create more inclusive, resilient cities. Later in the day, Safetipin led a session titled 'Making Transport Systems for All a Reality', focusing on gender-responsive urban mobility planning. Moderated by Kalpana, the session featured Ankita Kapoor, representing Women on the Move Transforming Transport in Asia. Panelists shared strategies for designing safer, more accessible transit systems for women and marginalized groups, highlighting gender-responsive projects as real-world solutions. Insights from government, industry, and civil society emphasized how cross-sector collaboration is reshaping urban transportation to be inclusive for all. Day 3 at #WUF12: Safetipin Driving Conversations for #Inclusive, #ResilientCities 🌍 Our team continued to lead vital discussions on Day 3 of the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt, joining global partners to share insights on creating safer, more inclusive urban spaces: 1️⃣ Kalpana Viswanath joined the panel '#AdaptiveStrategies for #PublicSpaces', where panelists exchanged ideas on innovative methods to revitalize public spaces for all. They discussed activation and revitalization approaches, shared practices to unlock local government revenue potential, and emphasized how research-practice partnerships can be transformative. This session highlighted the importance of well-designed, accessible public spaces for #InclusiveUrbanGrowth. 2️⃣ At the '#Women’sRoundtable', Kalpana moderated a dynamic session reflecting on nearly 30 years since the #BeijingDeclaration. With #Beijing30 on the horizon, panelists discussed opportunities and challenges women face in urban environments, covering critical areas such as access to funding, essential services, and decision-making power. The session offered forward-looking strategies for embedding #GenderResponsive frameworks into #UrbanPolicy and #UrbanDevelopment. 3️⃣ Neeruja Gupta took part in '#UrbanEphemera', an immersive, collaborative event where participants shared everyday objects capturing the essence of urban life. By exchanging items like metro tickets, street food wrappers, and postcards, participants created a collective tapestry celebrating the transient moments and memories that define cities’ identities. This installation highlighted the value of #CommunityNarratives in #CityPlanning and #Design. 4️⃣ In the session on '#BuildingFinancialSustainability' through #Localization', Kalpana participated in discussions with USAID (US Agency for International Development) and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) on empowering local actors to advance #SustainableDevelopment. Panelists explored USAID’s focus on locally led initiatives, including directing resources to local partners, elevating community leadership, and ensuring effective public financial management. This session underscored the importance of empowering local governments and communities to drive meaningful, lasting impact. With each session, Safetipin is building momentum toward a future where cities are #Safe, #Inclusive, and #Resilient. Day 2 at #WUF12: Safetipin Leading Conversations for Inclusive Cities 🌍 Our team actively participated in several key sessions on the second day of the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt 12 (#WUF12) hosted by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) in #Cairo, #Egypt, from November 4th to 8th, 2024, championing safer, inclusive, and gender-responsive urban spaces: 1️⃣ At the India Pavilion, Kalpana Viswanath shared insights on 'Sustainable Urban Livelihoods: A Pathway to Inclusive Cities' hosted by National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and celebrated the launch of the Centre for Sustainable Urban Livelihoods (CSUL), an initiative that promotes inclusive economic opportunities in urban areas. 2️⃣ Ankita Kapoor joined experts at 'Digital Technology for Local and Inclusive Development' a session hosted by #ChalmersUniversityofTechnology, #CairoUniversity, #UniversityofPretoria together with Safetipin and Platform of Community Action and Architecture (POCAA), discussing how digital tools can support community engagement, inform urban planning, and address issues from climate resilience to data accessibility. 3️⃣ Kalpana joined the panel 'Feminist Cities: Advancing Care, Climate Justice, and Inclusive Urban Planning', organized by the Women and Habitat Network of Latin America and the Caribbean. The session highlighted how local actions and feminist perspectives can drive equitable urban change. 4️⃣ In partnership with Global Infrastructure Basel Foundation (GIB) and UN Habitat Young Game Changers Initiative, Safetipin co-hosted 'Cities for Youth - Digital Tools and Youth Leadership for Urban Wellbeing.' In this session Neeruja Gupta with other esteemed panlists spotlighted the critical role of young leaders and digital innovation in shaping thriving, resilient communities. With diverse perspectives and a strong commitment to safer cities, Safetipin is excited to share more impactful moments from #WUF12. 🌍 As day two of #TransportWeek24 wraps up, we're excited to share the key messages that emerged from today’s sessions on “Multisectoral Urban Mobility”. Today’s discussions highlighted how cross-sectoral collaboration, gender-transformative policies, and regional cooperation can drive us closer to accessible and sustainable cities for all. Each message we collect during #TransportWeek24 will contribute to the shared vision of the transport community — culminating in a joint message that we’ll bring to #COP29. Day 1 of #WUF12 was an inspiring start!  Dr. Kalpana Viswanath opened the Women’s Assembly at the Joint Assemblies, marking a powerful moment in the world’s largest urban gathering. The Joint Opening of the Five Assemblies—Local and Regional Governments, Children & Youth, Women, Grassroots, and Business and Foundations—united voices from around the globe, including UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) leaders and representatives from the host country, to spotlight the top priorities for each assembly. This forum fostered essential dialogue, reflection, and a recommitment to multi-stakeholder, multilevel governance for sustainable urbanization, leaving no one and no place behind.  Later in the day, Kalpana moderated the Women’s Assembly, the pivotal event for champions of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The session began with high-level scene-setting, followed by six focused discussion groups that addressed critical themes: adequate housing for women, gender equality and climate change, ensuring no woman is left behind, funding women’s empowerment, gender equality in the digital era, and women in crisis settings. Our thanks to CEPT Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) and the The Urban Catalysts for an excellent session on #electromobility and standardising urban mobility systems at Urban Mobility India 2024. HVT work was presented by researchers including Surya Sugathan of the Center of Excellence in Urban Transport, CRDF, Ahmedabad, who outlined findings from research into a planning framework for low emissions zones #LEZ in core areas of Indian cities. Safetipin CEO and HVT ambassador, Kalpana Viswanath, explored further whether LEZ can work in the Indian context and whether they can be designed to be #inclusive.  The Urban Catalysts shared their work on women's mobility and access in Indian cities with a focus on #ebus systems, as detailed in their project exploring safe and secure public transport for women in #Delhi. Ashwini Kumar (IAS), Principal Secretary, Urban Development and Urban Housing Department, Gujarat gave opening remarks, followed by an introduction to the @FCDO and HVT programme by Moumita Bhattacharya, from the British Deputy High Commission Ahmedabad.
