This week we were happy to accept an invite to share our work through a case study at the Realty and Harit Bharat Sustainability Conclave. Wilma Rodrigues presented a live case study of Brookfield Properties and attended the day long conclave. She shares herewith her experiences and insights. “Personally, I have mixed feelings about my relationship with the real estate sector. There are those like Brookfield Properties , RMZ and Nucleus Office Parks, a Blackstone company in #Bangalore who have done exceptionally well to integrate waste management into their sustainability commitments. These are the companies that have received or working towards a TRUE Certification for Zero Waste by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). True Zero is the ultimate standard which encompasses the principles of resource recovery and circular economy. However, we have to admit that a large majority of brands including many big names continue to hide behind intent and rhetoric. The conclave brought to attention a big gap in our own engagement with this large chunk within the real estate sector. These are the mainstream brands that will need far more attention and we have to find different ways to enroll them into compliance. These are brands who will need to understand that not all sustainable initiatives have an ROI like energy or water and instead choose waste management because it comes with an ROE (Return on Environment) which is the anchor for sustainability. All in all I returned back with a new determination to engage with mainstream brands and persist in our efforts to bring them into the zero waste fold." We thanks Realty for the opportunity and look forward to more such engagements.

We bring together nature, people & technology to manage waste holistically through resource recovery & circular economy
About us
Saahas Zero Waste is a socio-environmental enterprise with an overall experience of 10 years in the waste management sector. We believe in a circular economy where all waste is converted to resources. In this context, we leverage technology and data to provide a transparent view of the waste flow and the impact created through responsible waste management. We specialise in designing and executing customised solutions for the goal of zero waste to landfills, especially for bulk waste generators such as technology parks, residential complexes, educational institutions, hotels and others. In 2018, we were awarded the Swachh Best Practice Award by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as recognition of the work done in the space. In addition, we work with brands and producers to channelize plastic waste and e-waste for responsible processing under their extended producer responsibilities. In 2019, we diverted 10,000 MT of plastic waste from dumpsites and other open spaces under the extended producer responsibility program. To close the loop, we also offer products made from waste such as roofing sheets, clipboards, stationary, upcycled textile products, apparel and more. Our work supports livelihoods at the base of the pyramid and we consistently strive towards increasing the social impact of our work.

The project "Building an Inclusive and Circular Textile Waste Value Chain in India," with Concordia Textiles, Enviu, and Purfi , within the framework of the develoPPP funding programme, implemented by GIZ India on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is coming to a successful conclusion. Over the past nine months, Saahas Zero Waste has proudly served as a knowledge partner for the project. Together, we have achieved the following remarkable milestones: Development of Textile Waste Management Methodology (TWMM): A comprehensive document outlining various sorting practices for pre and post-consumer textile waste and the requirements of textile waste recyclers. Explore the knowledge products developed under the project here: https://lnkd.in/gTwASWM2 Creation of teaching aids: Based on the TWMM, these aids feature appropriate designs, textual and visual cues to build capacities of informal waste workers, municipal waste workers, workers working with post-production waste and with solution providers, for effective sorting practices and improved resource recovery from textile waste. Training programs: We conducted 53 training programs on textile waste sorting, reaching 3003 waste workers across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, and Maharashtra. The programs engaged 1985 municipal workers, 537 informal workers, and 481 workers from sustainable solution providers, with 53% female participation. Events: Organised a networking event in Delhi and a national webinar to bring together stakeholders from the government, textile industry, innovators, informal sector, and policymakers to present the learnings from the project, foster partnerships, facilitate knowledge sharing and advocate for strategic actions in the textile industry. The networking event featured 14 speakers and 73 participants, while the webinar had 12 speakers and was attended by 155 participants. Watch the webinar recording here: https://lnkd.in/g599b9zH As we conclude this project, we are inspired by the strides made and the partnerships formed. Together, we have set a solid foundation for a more inclusive and circular textile waste value chain in India. We look forward to continuing this journey towards a sustainable future. 🌐Learn more about the project: https://lnkd.in/gW52vSPX and watch the project video here: https://lnkd.in/gVARaEt3 #CircularEconomy #TextileWaste #Sustainability #WasteManagement Meghana Kshirsagar | Isha Sharma | Sankalp Dubey | Astha Khubele | Annie Philip | Tanuja Rao | Manjunath Venkatram | Vivek Changappa | Charan Muthanna | Shiny Alex Alexander | Nanditha Sulur | Gigi Mathews | Greeshma Hegde

#WWFIndia, in collaboration with Saahas Zero Waste, recently launched Project SAIM (Sustainable Approach to Integrate Waste Management). A new 7,000-square-foot Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is the centerpiece of Project SAIM, located in Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), Margao Industrial Estate. This modern 7,000-square-foot facility can process up to 7.5 tonnes of dry waste daily using advanced equipment. Operating in compliance with environmental and social regulations, the MRF is crucial for effective waste management. The facility supports Project SAIM's goal of decentralizing waste management across 30 South Goa village panchayats. It serves various stakeholders, including hotels, resorts, businesses, schools, and local communities. By providing comprehensive dry waste handling services, the MRF helps reduce landfill waste and promotes recycling and co-processing practices in the region. The launch featured a keynote by Mr. Aleixo Sequeira, Hon'ble Minister of Law & Judiciary, Environment, Ports & Legislative Affairs, Government of Goa and a panel discussion on the "Role of Decentralized Waste Management in Goa" featuring eminent members from the government of Goa, the private sector, WWF-India, and Saahas Zero Waste.

We are happy to announce the successful launch of the SAIM project and our new MRF in Goa, which included a panel discussion with elected members from Village Panchayats in South Goa, including Chinchini, Curtorim, and Cavelossim, participated in a panel discussion on the benefits of decentralized administration, sharing successes in enforcing segregation and supporting the single-use plastic ban. For SZW, it was particularly satisfying to have our customer, the Panchayat of Chinchini, acknowledge the services we now provide to the village. The second panel, moderated by Dr.Sejal Worah, featured experts like Nandini Kumar, Ankit Gupta, Michelle Bambawale, and Wilma Rodrigues who discussed the need for decentralized waste management solutions in #Goa. #SAIM #Plasticpollution #wastemanagementsolutions

Textile and footwear waste is now contributing almost 10 percent of waste coming into MRFs. This waste is put under non-recyclable waste and is largely going to co-processing. We need to act with a sense of urgency so that this waste is also formally recycled and upcycled.
𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 – 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 👕 🔄 The textile industry is crucial to the global economy. However, its environmental impact is under scrutiny due to massive resource depletion and improper textile waste management. In India alone, 8 million tonnes of textile waste are generated annually which end up incinerated or dumped in landfills. The silver lining? Revolutionary approaches are emerging to reduce and recover textile waste, incorporating the informal sector and creating systemic solutions. This kind of a transition ensures environmental, social, and economic benefits by reclaiming the value of underutilised textile waste. To drive this change, we have teamed up with Saahas Zero Waste to organise the networking event ‘Stitching Sustainability - Change with Every Thread’. The event brought together key industry leaders, innovators, informal sector workers and policy makers for insightful discussions that emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships to promote a circular value chain for textile waste in India. The key takeaways of the event: 🧵 Collaboration is key: Establishing strong partnerships between different stakeholders, including government agencies, the private sector and informal workers, is crucial for the sustainable management of textile waste. 🧵 Policy support: Developing comprehensive policies to promote circularity, including Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) tailored to the textile sector, is essential for ensuring the long-term financing, accountability and sustainability of textile waste management systems. 🧵 Technology, innovation and markets: Advancements in sorting technology and recycling processes, as well as the creation of markets for recycled and upcycled goods, are critical to improving the quality of recycled textiles and recovering resources from all types of textile waste. 🧵 Involvement of informal workers: Involving informal waste workers in decision-making processes and ensuring their access to financial and market resources is necessary for a truly inclusive waste management system. 🧵 Local solutions: Tailoring solutions to local conditions and ensuring financial viability are key for the success and longevity of textile waste management projects. Together with our partners, we are committed to co-create innovative solutions towards #CircularEconomy, which is a priority area of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between #India and #Germany. Together, we are making strides towards a more sustainable future, one thread at a time!
