MY CAREER STORY In '88, I joined my family business (of trade and distribution) in Calcutta. The early 90s were when BIG changes were taking place in India. ➀ The economy was opening up to global imports, ➁ software and services exports were on the rise, and more importantly (or at least for me), ➂ there was a growing, but still niche, demand for dial-up bulletin board systems. By '94, I knew my long-term career would be centred around the internet. So, I took time off to found an AOL-like ISP (GUI based). And a few years down the line, I helped co-found a PE-funded web portal for Indian schoolgoers. By '02, however, the dot-com bubble had effectively scuttled my entrepreneurial plans. Luckily, I was hired by Reliance Infocomm Ltd, a new telco based in Bombay. And I was tasked with building the 3G Data Ops function from scratch. I am happy to share that by the time I left in 2010—we had scaled up to support over 100m SUBS, 1000s of POS terminals and ATMs and more than $2B in revenues. Post Reliance, I was VP at July Systems (a Bangalore startup) for about a year. Towards the end of my corporate career, I ran Managed SaaS P&L at Mobileum* Inc for 3 1/2 years. They were the world's leading vendor of GSM roaming solutions, with $70m in revenues across new license sales, support and SaaS. And, despite the ongoing recession in global business travel, I doubled ARR to $10m. Besides, I cleared a backlog of $1m in disputed invoices.
