Success as HR chief -Top ten key success factors learning from experience. 1. Establish the trust with the CEO. You can never win unless the top person fully trusts you. Become his confidante. This way you as an influencer, can get all your HR initiatives and the management team's ideas approved. While every CEO may preach a "level and equal playing field" for all the senior management team, it is not always the case. Those managing the money and bringing revenue ( finance and sales) will be one-up in the favour hierarchy, leaving HR at the bottom and the receiving end. One CEO even told me in one heated management meeting, that it is Sales that brings the cash in and I should not speak against their proposal even if it defies all equality. This only led to the most arrogant VP - sales behaviour. We can all agree that HR is undeniably important, but being a leadership afterthought is still a reality for many HR professionals, and it’s worth looking at why this is the case. Often we hear about HR being in the executive team, for technical expertise in HR, just as a finance director is a member of the executive team with financial expertise. 2. Become a mentor to a few of your senior colleagues. Then impart to them the "managing and leadership" lessons. This way you will earn their respect.This way you can identify the potential leaders. To do this and get accepted your knowledge must be expert-level 3. Be the champion to air the views of others in dissenting agenda items in management meetings. You can do this if you achieve the goal mentioned in point 1. 4. Exhibit the business understanding. Generally, people think that HR is not good for business understanding. I mean be smart with facts and financial metrics. 5. Be visible outside and establish the HR and corporate brand. Writing and seminar-leading conference speaking are the ideal vehicle 6. Build a very competent HR team with your superior knowledge and skill. Make continuous learning a habit with the team. This will not only earn their respect but also build an independent working culture. My teams always had learning time every Saturday for 3 hours. Each one had to make a presentation on a given topic. The topics were labour laws and in-depth applied behavioural science. They don't teach these in the MBA curriculum. 7. Establish direct communication with as many people as possible reach 80 per cent of people in one year and try to revisit every alternate year. Outreach efforts pay well. 8. Set HR team's competency standard in terms of internal customer satisfaction. a score less than 9 should be unacceptable. 9. A good measure of HR’s success is to see how many people want to join the HR team from other streams. 10. Establish a culture of efficient hiring through intense interviewing. This way retention issues are minimised; Managers must be trained to hire for the organisation and not for their projects. #leadership #HR #trust #Companyculture
