About us

The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) was founded in 1965 to replace exploitation with empowerment, tradition with modernity, stagnation with growth, transforming dairying into an instrument for the development of India's rural people. NDDB began its operations with the mission of making dairying a vehicle to a better future for millions of grassroots milk producers. The mission achieved thrust and direction with the launching of "Operation Flood", a programme extending over 26 years and which used World Bank loan to finance India's emergence as the world's largest milk producing nation. Operation Flood's third phase was completed in 1996 and has to its credit a number of significant achievements. Since its inception, the Dairy Board has planned and spearheaded India's dairy programmes by placing dairy development in the hands of milk producers and the professionals they employ to manage their cooperatives. In addition, NDDB also promotes other commodity-based cooperatives, allied industries and veterinary biologicals on an intensive and nation-wide basis. The National Dairy Development Board has been constituted as a body corporate and declared an institution of national importance by an Act of India's Parliament. The National Dairy Development Board -- initially registered as a society under the Societies Act 1860 -- was merged with the erstwhile Indian Dairy Corporation, a company formed and registered under the Companies Act 1956, by an Act of India's Parliament - the NDDB Act 1987 (37 of 1987), with effect from 12 October, 1987. The new body corporate was declared an institution of national importance by the Act. The general superintendence, direction, control and management of NDDB's affairs and business vests with the Board of Directors.

  • Hon'ble Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh 'Lalan Singh ji' during his address at the farmers' conference held in Washim, Maharashtra, highlighted the progress made in the dairy sector and expressed his gratitude to Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji for the inauguration of two new initiatives—indigenous semen sex-sorting technology and genomic chips. He mentioned that the semen sex-sorting technology developed by NDDB is highly affordable for farmers, leading to widespread adoption and a significant increase in milk production. The Minister also spoke about the genomic chip, explaining that NDDB, in collaboration with Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying and other institutions, has developed the 'Gauchip' for cows and the 'Mahishchip' for buffaloes, which are aligned with Indian breeds. These will bring about rapid genetic improvement, and this service will now be made available through NDDB CALF Limited and Kerala Livestock Development Board. He emphasised that these technologies and services are a major step towards achieving Prime Minister's vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and also praised the work of NDDB in this direction.

  • It is a proud moment for NDDB today as Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, in a significant step towards a 'Developed and Atmanirbhar Bharat,' dedicated two important technological initiatives developed by NDDB and Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying to the Nation during the farmers' meet in Washim, Maharashtra. The indigenously developed semen sex-sorting technology by NDDB, in collaboration with NDDB Dairy Services (NDS), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, will ensure the birth of 85-90% female calves. This indigenous technology will be available to farmers at around ₹250 for sexed semen, allowing more farmers to benefit from it, which will lead to an overall increase in milk production. The genomic chips 'Gauchip' and 'Mahishchip,' developed by NDDB in collaboration with NBAGR, NIAB, and BAIF, will prove to be a crucial tool for the genomic selection programme of the country. Genomic selection will help farmers identify high-quality animals at a young age.
