𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟖, 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐡𝐢. For 16-year-old Geeta Chopra & her 14-year-old brother Sanjay, it was going to be an exciting day. They were on their way to participate in the All India Radio show, ‘Yuva Vani’. But their journey took an unexpected turn. 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐧, Kuljeet Singh, alias Ranga, and Jasbir Singh, alias Billa, snatched the unsuspecting siblings from the bustling street on the pretense of offering them a lift. Witnessed by several bystanders, Geeta & Sanjay screamed for help from a speeding white Fiat, and tried to break free from the kidnappers. While many witnesses tried to report the incident and follow the car they were spotted in, the goons subsequently escaped. When the kids’ parents tuned into the radio to listen to the children, they were nowhere to be found. A phone call to All India Radio revealed that the children never made it to the radio station. Madan Mohan Chopra, their father, a captain of the Indian Navy, felt the ground crumble beneath his feet. A frantic search yielded nothing but a gnawing emptiness. 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐞 – the rapidly decomposing bodies of Geeta & Sanjay. The post-mortem revealed brutal injuries and days of exposure to the unforgiving summer sun. Geeta's body offered no conclusive evidence of sexual assault. News of the case, 𝐝𝐮𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚-𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞, spread like wildfire. The kidnappers were arrested 10 days later while trying to board the military compartment in a train. Despite trying to spin a yarn to escape the allegations, it was later found that the two had come to Delhi to escape Bombay police, where they were wanted for another kidnapping. They stole a Fiat car, the vehicle in which the children were kidnapped. The same Fiat, traced through a series of reckless traffic violations, became a silent witness. The brutality of the crime, and the callous disregard for human life, sent  𝐰𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 through the nation. 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞, 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠, 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭. The courts echoed the weight of evidence and the pleas for retribution. But the gavel slammed down with the death penalty for Ranga & Billa. The verdict resonated throughout India, a reminder that innocence lost demands a heavy price. The Ranga-Billa case wasn't just about two lives extinguished. It 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 and sparked a movement for stricter laws to protect them. Even today, the Ranga-Billa case 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 to the potential for human evil and an echo of a summer's day gone tragically dark. 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. #judgment #justice

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐑𝐚𝐣, 𝟏𝟗𝐭𝐡-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚. That’s where we want to take you with our post, today. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡, 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦, 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭. A series of scathing articles penned by a man named Mulji, a journalist with a nose for truth and a pen dipped in audacity.  𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐣, 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐠 𝐕𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭. Mulji claimed that the Maharaj engaged in immoral and illegal acts comprising sexual misconduct with female devotees, and demanded male devotees’ wives to be offered in "religious service". Outraged, the accused Maharaj, Jadunathji Brijratanji, retaliated. He slammed Mulji with a defamation lawsuit. The resulting trial, the Maharaj Libel Case of 1861, became a captivating spectacle. On one side, Mulji, armed with evidence and a fierce commitment to truth, stood alongside his lawyer, Thomas Chisholm Anstey. On the other side, Sir Lyttleton Holyoake Bayley, representing the Maharaj. The trial was a media frenzy, dubbed the "𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬" by some. At the heart of the case lay a critical question: 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐣𝐢'𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐣'𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?  𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝, 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧? The verdict was delivered in April 1862, with Chief Justice Sir Matthew Richard Sausse ruling in favor of Mulji. The judge declared Mulji's duty to expose potential wrongdoing justified, 𝐚 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦. Mulji was vindicated, and Jadunathji was ordered to pay a sum of Rs 11,500. The Maharaj Libel Case reverberated far beyond the courtroom. It became a testament to the power of journalism to hold the powerful accountable.  It established a precedent for protecting investigative reporting and the right to expose corruption. 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐣𝐢'𝐬 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦, 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞. Though the case had its detractors, leaving a mark on the relationship between the press and religious authority, it remains a cornerstone in Indian journalism's history. This case is a testament to the enduring pursuit of truth and justice, a story where a single voice dared to challenge the status quo and ignited a firestorm for positive change. #landmark #judgment
