The development of the Polo View Street in Srinagar shows how listening to citizens can help cities grow. This initiative was sparked by a plea from local traders, who wanted to transform this vehicle-centric street into a vibrant pedestrian haven. They also faced other issues of limited pedestrian space, chaotic parking, insufficient street lighting, and a dysfunctional drainage system. Responding to this public demand, Srinagar Smart City Ltd took the lead in transforming Polo View Street into a vibrant hub that celebrates the city’s social and cultural essence. Reclaiming about 6000 sq. m for pedestrians and cyclists, the project converted a vehicle-centric street into a pedestrian-priority zone. To enhance the heritage value of the street, building facades were given a facelift with improved illumination, using mostly locally sourced materials Read the full story here - https://bit.ly/3Y9P0Vz  #SmartCityMission #MoHUA #SmartCities #Srinagar #Kashmir Hardeep Singh Puri | Kunal Kumar | Vikash Chandra Smart Cities Mission

🌟 This week, we spotlight the transformative journey of the Polo View Street in Srinagar, from the #StreetsForPeople Compendium! 🌟 Srinagar’s Polo View Street’s revamp has been a true success story as it is one the rare street projects to have received full support and ownership from the local communities. Post-implementation, the local traders and the community has taken on the responsibility of maintaining the area through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Srinagar Smart City Limited. Shopkeepers ensure regular cleaning, monitor for vandalism, and manage the retractable bollards for emergency and logistical needs, while CCTV cameras enhance security. This collective effort has transformed Polo View Street into a thriving, well-maintained public space that reflects the community's commitment and pride. Watch the full video interview of Anuj Malhotra, General Manager of Srinagar Smart City Ltd who explains the secrets behind the success of the project and also highlights how they overcame challenges of manpower, experts etc. Link in comments #SmartCityMission #MoHUA #SmartCities #Srinagar #Kashmir   Hardeep Singh Puri | Kunal Kumar | Vikash Chandra    Smart Cities Mission

‘I wish I wish I wish with all my heart...’ 💫    Ever wondered what are the few things that could be the game-changer for sustainable transport in India?     For starters, we believe that it is time the Union government sets out at least 50-60% of the transport budget for sustainable transport. As per Census 2011, at least 72% of trips in India are on sustainable means and it is only fair to give it a proportionate share!    With a week to go for the 2024 #Union #Budget announcement in the Parliament, we at ITDP India have compiled a ‘Sustainable Transport Wishlist for India’. From e-buses to parking policies, to mandatory street design guidelines, to inclusive mobility cell, and strong UMTAs- we wish it all!    Read our blog to know the 5 broad areas in which we think budget allocations must be made and why - https://lnkd.in/gRgUMsUY While the Indian government has already set in motion some of these intervention in small and big scales, we wish for a renewed focus on sustainability in transport, this year.

Contrary to the fears that pedestrianisation projects can disrupt business, Pondy Bazar’s success story proves otherwise. The commercial thoroughfare has been transformed into an inviting, safe, and vibrant open street mall, fostering shopping and recreational experiences for all age groups    Dr J. Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Chennai Smart City Ltd explains in this tell-all interview how the success of pedestrian-friendly streets in Pondy Bazar has actually led to more commercial streets seeking the same. “Instead of losing out on the happening crowds to newer malls, the revamp of Pondy Bazar ensured that people came back in hoards to this historic market. This has led to areas like Monteith street, Pantheon road seeking a renewal,” he said.    Watch the full video interview to explore how the Pondy Bazar redesign reflects the delicate balance between preserving heritage, embracing modern urban needs and commercial business.  Link in comments #SmartCityMission #MoHUA #SmartCities #TamilNadu #Chennai Hardeep Singh Puri | Kunal Kumar | Vikash Chandra    Smart Cities Mission

Discover the Power of Pedestrianization at Pondy Bazar! 🚶♂️    Most cities would go the flyover way to solve the traffic and congestion issue. But Chennai’s Pondy Bazar is an outlier for the trend as - forget building flyovers- they did not even opt to widen the carriageway, and instead transomed a 1.4km stretch of road into a vibrant and pedestrian-friendly zone.     🌳✨ With over 50% of its right of way (RoW) dedicated to walking, sitting, and playing, this prime commercial area now sees more than 4,000 pedestrians daily. This innovative design has created a bustling, thriving and congestion-free social space right in the heart of T Nagar.    📈💸 The results are impressive. 93% of women said they felt safer walking the stretch after 10 pm post the intervention. Almost all users said the space is safer for children now and they walk more often on the stretch after the revamp. Over and above this, a 20% increase in land value in just two years and a 15-20% boost in commercial sales during the November 2020 to February 2021 period compared to the same timeframe in 2018 and 2019. Discover how prioritising pedestrians over cars was a win-win for all stakeholders in Pondy Bazar. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation recently rolled out an online survey, to understand and resolve the city’s acute residential parking problems. The survey, apart from seeking information on the current residential parking patterns, also sought suggestions from the residents on how to resolve the issue. It is great to see Navi Mumbai adopt such a participatory approach to an issue that has become a major concern for our streets – parking!     ITDP strongly believes in ‘parking management’ but also believes that this subject is often entangled in myths and misconceptions. Resolving these myths is critical for any city before planning and implementing parking management systems.  🚗 🅿   Want to know what these myths are? 🚫   1. Parking is a right  2. Increase parking supply to resolve the parking issue   3. Multi-level car parks can resolve the issue  4. Curtailing parking can hurt commercial businesses   📖 Read this blog which we penned down in 2019, explaining the four common myths people have around parking systems: https://lnkd.in/gWz3w2Ws     #NaviMumbai #Parking

🚴♂️ Inspiring Leadership in Action 🚴♂️ On July 2, we witnessed a remarkable moment as the outgoing Prime Minister of the Netherlands, #MarkRutte, cycled his way out of his office. This powerful image fills us with both joy and hope for the future. In the #Netherlands, cycling isn't just a mode of transport—it is a way of life embraced by all, including its leadership. Mark Rutte’s choice to #cycle sets a shining example for world leaders everywhere to adopt #sustainabletransport practices. Imagine a future where such commitment to sustainable transport is not just an option, but the first choice and the norm. We hope to work towards such a future when we see similar dedication in #India and across the globe. 🌍🚴♀️ Let us pedal towards a greener, healthier future!  Video courtesy: @MiesBee (From X)
