Enabling collective action for educational equity in India

I said this 5 years ago. And I'll say it again. Michael Zehavi from Teach For America asked me in 2019: "What's the single most powerful predictor of the success of a community?" "Diversity", I said, without thinking twice. While we have a long road ahead to nurture diversity, last week's InnovatED selection event reinforced this for me. InnovatED is Teach For India's flagship nine-month incubation program for early-stage organizations committed to educational equity. Since 2017, we've incubated a community of 57 entrepreneurs who have reached over three million children. Our selection panels for InnovatED this year witnessed: 🎯 A private sector leader grilling the candidates on their unit economics and growth projections 🎬 A Coach who was curious about their story, their purpose their strong suits and biggest barriers 🔍 An Entrepreneur from our earlier InnovatED cohorts, quizzing them on their direction & what they intend to get out of the program  ❤️ And most importantly, a student who asked them the most simple yet profound questions on their solution's relevance & effectiveness We're extremely grateful to this diverse group of panellists for spending their Saturday with us. Aabha Bakaya Aditya KV Atul Pokhriyal Hemakshi Meghani Kumkum Chauhan Mansi Panjwani Monika Malo Nayanika Rungta Saahil Sood Shiksha Shivam Shahi Soarabh Pathak (and SVP India), Sushil Jhangiani We hope that our InnovatED cohort of 2024 is diverse too.  You'll hear more soon after we're through with our due diligence. #entrepreneurship #innovation #diversity

Enabling collective action for educational equity in India

How do you find the surface area of anything? Say a water bottle, a bagpack or even your body. Now let's travel back in time for a moment. Here's likely how we've learnt to calculate area back in school: ➡️ We were introduced to parameters like length, breadth, radius etc. ➡️ We then saw template shapes like a square, rectangle, cone etc. ➡️ We were then given formulae like l x b, a^2 and pi^r^2 And that's pretty much where it used to end, almost making us beleive that one can't find the area of shapes that didn't fit this mould. In an unassuming corner of Thenur, in rural Tamilnadu (near Tiruchirapalli), I had the opportunity to witness Deepak's teachers learning this concept in one of the most creative ways ever, and with so much joy. Here's how they learnt: 1️⃣ They first covered each other in newspapers. 2️⃣ Then, cut the newspaper covering open 3️⃣ Rearranged parts of it on the floor to resemble a rectangle 4️⃣ Multiplied it's length and breadth to an approximation of 17000 sq. cm. Not just that, Deepak went on to connect this to physics too about how ~17000 Kg weight of force is experienced by every square centimetre area of our body in any moment. And thanks to our blood pressure and our skin holding our internal organs in place, we don't have to worry about this pressure. The best part, this lesson is low-cost & scalable: requires only used newspapers and an inch tape. Follow Deepak Chandra S M and Maya M's organization Joy of Discovery on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gp-ZJQy2 to learn more and please refer schools in Chennai that could benefit from his services. Want to build an organisation like Deepak? Apply to InnovatED , Teach For India's incubator for early-stage education entrepreneurs (exclusive to TFI Alumni). 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g3VfrBwx ⏳ Deadline 22nd May (Wednesday)

This is a story of opportunity and challenge — and InnovatED, in its journey of navigating between opportunity and challenges for early-stage entrepreneurs, closed out its 7th Cohort with the Summit. The Summit marks the final boot camp, with entrepreneurs graduating from the program  and into the larger collective of InnovatED entrepreneurs. Their steadfast commitment filled us with inspiration and optimism for what lies ahead! We are incredibly grateful to all our facilitators who created such power-packed knowledge spaces for our entrepreneurs. Saahil Sood from Co.labx conducted sessions on how to be an effective team by clarifying team priorities, roles for decision-making and feedback systems; and hosted a brilliant life-maps session with the entrepreneurs sharing their life journeys. We had lewitt Somarajan provide sharp insights into funders' mind and their expectations, while Alankrita Khera 's guidance helped entrepreneurs articulate their vision and work effectively to make their pitch perfect! We had the privilege to observe a class in action at the OSCAR Foundation , which instills life skills in youngsters through football practice. We witnessed them learn to break gender stereotypes, followed by a talk by the founder, Ashok Rathod reinstated our belief about the importance of sports in education as a tool for a better life. We had a very enlightening session on the Government partnerships approach and cultivation by Parag Jalan and a riveting exchange with Shiraz Bulsara Prabhu about Ed-Inequity and exclusion in the entrepreneurs' contexts. Sonali Saini , the founder of Sol's ARC , had a dialogue with the entrepreneurs about program evolution and readiness for scale in width. We closed the summit with a Demo Day, where our inspiring cohort showcased their work and shared their ideas with people from diverse backgrounds. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our distinguished panelists for their commitment to our mission and their generous investment of time and expertise. Yatendra is a Launchpad Alumnus from our second cohort. Yatendra has a Master's degree in Social Work. There was a time in 2016 when he was preparing for defense services exams and wanted to join the air force as a pilot. During his preparation, he used to work for an NGO where he found that our country has multiple social issues and to overcome that, we need quality education. 💡 To fulfill his dream, he started Yuva Tejas in 2021 to train underprivileged students to join high ranking officer roles in defence .Their vision is that "No aspirant will suffer due to a lack of resources while preparing for defence services." 💥 Do you also have an idea that you would want to test ? Let us collaborate! 🤝 Application Link : https://shorturl.at/xCNSV FAQ Document: https://shorturl.at/jqzDI

You could settle. For the designation. For the neat paycheck. The safety of the herd. A boss. A schedule. Your parents' approval. A compromise on dreams. A known tomorrow. Many known tomorrows. Or you could fight. For that dream you've always had. For change. For a changed nation. For a hundred kids you don't even know. For their Freedom. For your Freedom. For the leaders they could become. And the leader you know you can be. For a name, carved in History! Launchpad is InnovatED's pre-incubation program fostering aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators from Teach For India. If you are sitting with an idea and want to implement with a vision for change, apply now at https://lnkd.in/gpZstBYD Head over to https://lnkd.in/gCRc53Hp to access the FAQ document Applications close by 28th of February Teach For India
