Very exciting times indeed for social impact investing in India !! We are very inspired by the seminar organized by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) to raise awareness regarding the Social Stock Exchange (SSE) that it has set up with the approval of SEBI and as proposed by the Honourable Finance Minister. It is a promising initiative where Social enterprises and Not For Profit organizations working for social causes and for the under privileged can raise funds through “Zero Coupon Zero Principal” Instrument. Also registration with SSE with its impact measurement & reporting requirements will provide greater credibility and visibility to the NPOs. The 15th FoodWorld India 2024 was held today at Yashobhoomi (IICC), the largest Convention and exhibition center of India. The leaders of the food industry shared their thoughts on People positive food systems - Ensuring health & nutrition for all and Planet positive food systems - Building climate resilient, responsible and sustainable food systems. FICCI and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) also released a white paper on “Nourishing India sustainably”. We at India FoodBanking Network are so glad to see “Reducing food loss and food waste” being highlighted as one of the important components of a holistic transformation of food systems.

Right against Climate Change a fundamental right, says the Supreme Court of India !! “The right to health (which is a part of the right to life under Article 21) is impacted due to factors such as air pollution, shifts in vector-borne diseases, rising temperatures, droughts, shortages in food supplies due to crop failure, storms, and flooding. The inability of underserved communities to adapt to climate change or cope with its effects violates the right to life as well as the right to equality… If climate change and environmental degradation lead to acute food and water shortages in a particular area, poorer communities will suffer more than richer ones,” the judgment said. According to The Food Waste Index Report 2024 released by UN Environment Programme today, each person wastes on an average 79 kg food annually which is equivalent to 1 billion meals being wasted worldwide every single day. Food loss and food waste generate 8-10% of GHG emissions. And all this occurs while 783 million people are hungry globally !! Food loss and food waste needs to be addressed at systemic and individual level. The Public Distribution System (PDS) of India with the legal backing of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013 is the largest food distribution network in the world providing food and nutrition security to its people. I feel privileged to contribute and learn from the co-members (from the Government, academia, research institutions and community based organizations )of the National Human Rights Commission’s Core Group on Right to Food & Nutrition. Digitization of ration cards, biometric authentication, end to end computerization and One Nation One Ration Card enabling nation wide portability are improving the efficiency of the system. However the road map for the future should include a greater focus on inclusion, nutrition, dietary diversification, protein rich and nutrient dense foods, fortification, preventing overnutrition and reducing food loss & food waste.
