Fighting Hunger, Improving Nutrition and Reducing Food Waste

About us

India FoodBanking Network (IFBN) - an initiative of Food Security Foundation India addresses the issues of hunger through a network of FoodBanks. We have a vision to eliminate hunger in India by 2030 by establishing a strong and efficient network of FoodBanks throughout the country, so that every district has access to at least one FoodBank. India FoodBanking Network (IFBN) is bringing together the government, private sector, and NGOs to fight hunger and malnutrition in the country. IFBN is establishing a network of transformational FoodBanks to systematically capture food from donors and channelize it to the institutional feeding programs. The network is a multi-stakeholder partnership of corporate sector, government, leading development agencies, and local communities who partner and contribute to sustain the food banking movement in India. IFBN thus acts as a platform for aggregation and effective deployment of India’s existing resources of food, funds, infrastructure, technology, spirit of volunteerism and culture of feeding to address the problem of hunger. In addition to supporting feeding institutions and strengthening delivery systems, IFBN is also looking at facilitating regulatory changes to create an environment conducive to giving food.

It was truly enriching to interact with scientists, researchers and academicians from the IITs of India and Universities of Malaysia, Singapore and Croatia at INSORE 2024 International Summit at Kuala Lumpur. The discussions around climate change and food security and the urgency to keep 1.5 ºC goal alive were both insightful and critical. It is apparent that Universities and Research Institutions play a pivotal role in advancing Climate Science, driving innovations and shaping public policy. India FoodBanking Network is excited to explore collaborations with these Institutions to drive and measure meaningful climate action on the ground, promote sustainable practices and build long term resilience. #FoodLossandFoodWaste #MethaneEmissions #FoodRecovery #TargetActMeasure #InternationalDayOfAwarenessOfFoodLossAndFoodWaste

Food has the power to create change ! Change that can- -improve lives, -strengthen communities and -protect our planet. While not everyone has equal access to food, about 1/3rd of all food is lost or wasted globally. And this #foodloss and #foodwaste contributes up to 8 to 10% of all #greenhousegas emissions - further driving the #climatecrisis. We need change ! Join hands with India FoodBanking Network to mobilize food to provide food for communities, food for nutrition, food for climate resilience, food for a better future. #FoodForChange #PoshanMaah - Nourishing a Healthier India. #WorldFoodDay - Right to foods for a better life and a better future.

Very exciting times indeed for social impact investing in India !! We are very inspired by the seminar organized by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) to raise awareness regarding the Social Stock Exchange (SSE) that it has set up with the approval of SEBI and as proposed by the Honourable Finance Minister. It is a promising initiative where Social enterprises and Not For Profit organizations working for social causes and for the under privileged can raise funds through “Zero Coupon Zero Principal” Instrument. Also registration with SSE with its impact measurement & reporting requirements will provide greater credibility and visibility to the NPOs. We look forward to registering and listing India FoodBanking Network on the Social Stock Exchange platform. #impactinvesting for #SDGs and #nationbuilding

Right against Climate Change a fundamental right, says the Supreme Court of India !! “The right to health (which is a part of the right to life under Article 21) is impacted due to factors such as air pollution, shifts in vector-borne diseases, rising temperatures, droughts, shortages in food supplies due to crop failure, storms, and flooding. The inability of underserved communities to adapt to climate change or cope with its effects violates the right to life as well as the right to equality… If climate change and environmental degradation lead to acute food and water shortages in a particular area, poorer communities will suffer more than richer ones,” the judgment said. India FoodBanking Network is committed to contribute to national efforts to reduce food loss and waste which is estimated to contribute 8-10% of the GreenHouse Gases globally exacerbating the climate crisis. #EarthMonth - “Conserving every ecosystem, Caring for every creature” https://lnkd.in/gqrAbGzy

According to The Food Waste Index Report 2024 released by UN Environment Programme today, each person wastes on an average 79 kg food annually which is equivalent to 1 billion meals being wasted worldwide every single day. Food loss and food waste generate 8-10% of GHG emissions. And all this occurs while 783 million people are hungry globally !! Food loss and food waste needs to be addressed at systemic and individual level. Each one of us can reduce food waste and contribute to solving two major challenges of food insecurity and the climate crisis. https://lnkd.in/g7BsMQEt

The Public Distribution System (PDS) of India with the legal backing of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013 is the largest food distribution network in the world providing food and nutrition security to its people. I feel privileged to contribute and learn from the co-members (from the Government, academia, research institutions and community based organizations )of the National Human Rights Commission’s Core Group on Right to Food & Nutrition. Digitization of ration cards, biometric authentication, end to end computerization and One Nation One Ration Card enabling nation wide portability are improving the efficiency of the system. However the road map for the future should include a greater focus on inclusion, nutrition, dietary diversification, protein rich and nutrient dense foods, fortification, preventing overnutrition and reducing food loss & food waste.
