Dr. Meenesh Shah , Chairman, NDDB & Indian Immunologicals Limited launched NDDB Foundation for Nutrition’s flagship Giftmilk Programme at Pollachi in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. The programme is funded under CSR of NDDB’s wholly-owned subsidiary IIL. Selvi A Catherine Saranya, Sub-Collector, Pollachi; Dr. K Anand Kumar, MD, IIL and Shri R Kesavakumar, District Education Officer, Coimbatore graced the occasion. The programme aims to address malnutrition among school children by providing 200 ml of flavoured milk fortified with Vitamin A & D daily to about 1,200 children. NDDB Foundation for Nutrition will ensure a steady milk supply for this initiative. During the launch event, Chairman, NDDB highlighted the pressing concern of child malnutrition citing recent surveys that reveal alarming rates of stunted and underweight children under the age of 5. To combat this issue, Dr. Shah emphasised NDDB’s ongoing efforts since 2016 to promote school milk programme through Giftmilk programme of NFN. The initiative has made significant strides, benefitting over 500 schools across India reaching to over 1.1 lakh children since 2016. It has now expanded to encompass 4 govt. schools and 10 tribal Govt. hostels in and around Pollachi aiming to reach most needy and vulnerable children. He also mentioned the programme’s positive impact on reducing school absenteeism and improving child health, citing the findings from a study conducted by Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi. He further expressed gratitude to IIL and local administration for their roles in the launch of the programme underlining the significance of sustained efforts to ensure the well-being and health of future generations. In her address, Selvi Saranya expressed her gratitude to Chairman, NDDB & MD, IIL . She specifically mentioned the shortage of milk in government hostels, particularly in Valparai and thanked IIL for their prompt action in arranging supply of milk to these institutions. Reflecting on India's journey in milk production, she highlighted its evolution from scarcity to becoming the world's leading milk producer, a revolution spearheaded by Dr. Verghese Kurien. She urged recognition of this legacy as individuals receive their daily milk and hoped for the expansion of the scheme to more schools in Pollachi. Dr. Kumar stressed the profound impact of Giftmilk programme, which currently provides 200 ml of fortified milk daily to 3,500 children at Laxmapur, Telangana & at Ooty, Tamil Nadu. Highlighting the scheme's importance, Dr. Kumar emphasised its role in addressing the nutritional needs of children in rural areas, thereby enhancing their health and academic performance. He proudly mentioned IIL's significant contribution to social causes, amounting to approximately Rs. 20 crore over the past four years.
