The rainy season presents the risk for the spread of communicable diseases because of the stagnant water collecting in our surroundings. Since June, our Community Health Associates have been conducting meetings in the communities and talking about the ways to safeguard against Typhoid. 27 meetings have been conducted so far which were attended by 220 community members. We were delighted to have Patrick D., Independent Director, Wipro and Avinash Kumar, Program Head Education, Wipro Foundation, visit us to understand our interventions at GHPS Kodathi. The Wipro team spent time with Gubbachi’s founding team to understand the challenges of access to education, health and financial institutions that migrant families face in a city like Bengaluru. Mr Dupuis also visited the Azim Premji Foundation Health Centre at Kariyammana Agrahara where we are the outreach partner. Thank you Moder for donating brand new laptops to support Computer Education at our Community Learning Centre at Kariyammana Agrahara! 42 students in our Bridge Program are registered for the Open Basic Education (Grades 3/5/8) exams to be held in February 2025. They needed access to computers to hone their skills and work towards success in exams - a huge milestone for our group of First Generation learners. Moder stepped in and made it happen. Three students who went through our Bridge Program  completed their 10th grade exams in 2021 are now in a reputed university pursuing undergraduate courses. Currently 25 students are at various stages of giving their 10th grade exams (NIOS or SSLC) at our two bridge programs. Bringing these children up to this stage takes a lot. Adolescents in our programs are at high risk of dropping out due to a variety of social and economic pressures - continuing to study has little buy in from families who are in survival mode. It has involved hours of effort by our teachers and volunteers to bridge their learning gaps and have conversations with their families to construct a vision of the future for each child. But once the lock-in happens, it is a satisfying feeling! We need funds to get them into our Bridge Programs that are designed for learning recovery. It is India Philanthropy Day tomorrow! An integral part of our Bridge program is the Early Childhood program that engages with 3-6 year olds. Gubbachi Buds is an allied program that was designed to support the older sibling in the Bridge program - who otherwise is burdened with sibling care. This is a big reason why they don't even get to go to school or stay in school. We need funds to get more out-of-school children into our Bridge Programs that provide holistic learning opportunities. When families migrate, it instantly impacts the child’s schooling. Not only is access not assured in the city but learning levels are also generally not on par with the child's age. Our Bridge program understands this age-learning disparity. A simple baseline assessment tells us where the child is at. Children above 10 years are fast tracked with an initial focus on building foundational literacy and then progressing towards higher levels and eventually to Grade 10 through NIOS or SSLC. 30 teachers (including 9 volunteer teachers) are helping 243 children enrolled in our Bridge programs to close their learning gaps and progress towards 10th grade. We are raising funds to continue bringing out-of-school children back into the education fold. It is India Philanthropy Day this Friday!
