About us
Our sector makes an incredible difference to the world, but it’s shrouded in unhelpful traditions, outdated measures of impact and barriers to participation. That’s why since we launched our Real Impact Manifesto in 2018, we’ve been calling out problems in the sector and changing how we work. We’re seeing green shoots of progress, but significant change will require the entire sector to commit and act. So, here in 2022, we’re relaunching our Real Impact Manifesto and asking you to join us in working towards a fairer, more equitable environment where research can have a real-world impact and those within it can reach their full potential.

Data Dan runs England! There's not many people who would commit to running an ultra-marathon for five days but this is exactly what our Director of Data at Emerald Publishing, Daniel Molesworth is doing! Otherwise known as ‘Data Dan’, he is on day two of his mega challenge and is raising funds for the BookTrust, a charity close to Dan's heart. Dan's challenge involves running a 300km multi-day ultra-marathon, travelling on Wainwright’s Coast to Coast route. His journey began at St Bees in Cumbria yesterday and will conclude at Robin Hood’s Bay on Sunday 29th September. This feat involves running an average of 60km per day and ascending nearly 8000m, almost the height of Mount Everest. Dan’s run coincides with our 'Big Walk' which takes place tomorrow, Friday 27th September and will see colleagues take part in sponsored walks, both in the UK and in other regions, including Dubai and Kuala Lumpur. All of these events are taking place for one main reason - and that's to raise vital funds for the BookTrust, a charity dedicated to getting children reading from their earliest days, and our chosen charity of the year. We're all so proud of what Dan is doing and wish him lots of luck with the remainder of this extraordinary challenge. If you'd like to support Dan, you can find out more about the ultra-marathon and how to donate here 👇 https://bit.ly/4eE9wCQ

It's day 3 of Peer Review Week, and today we're shining a light on an interesting research article by Dr Emmanuel M. The article 'Viewpoint: the evolving landscape of peer review', published in the Journal of Services Marketing, is a personal reflection, drawing on first-hand experiences as a frequent reviewer, which many of you will relate to. As well as highlighting the invaluable contributions of reviewers to the scholarly community, Dr Mogaji also offers suggestions and considerations for various stakeholders involved in the process. (This includes examples of personalised messages that editors can use to engage potential reviewers effectively). From incentives to artificial intelligence to open review, the article raises many valid points, in areas we're currently discussing too. You can read the article in full by following the link below. ▶️ https://bit.ly/4djVqp3 Please keep the discussions going by adding your experiences or thoughts on some of the suggestions made, in the comments below. #PeerReviewWeek2024 #PeerReview #AcademicPublishing

It's Peer Review Week! No matter your stance on the peer review process, Peer Review Week opens up additional opportunities to ask questions and have important conversations about how our industry can continue to advance the peer review process and its role in shaping scholarly communication. So we're kicking off Peer Review Week with an interview with Emerald's Head of Research Integrity, Laura Etchells. Having recently started in the role, Laura discusses the close link between peer reviewing and research integrity and the impact of innovation and technology, both today and in the future. For Emerald, the peer review process is crucial to ensuring the utmost trust in the quality of research being published; we know we couldn't do this without the support from our reviewer community.
