Ads Are Harmful for Health: A Critical Examination When I open Instagram these days, almost every post is accompanied by an ad. A significant number of these advertisements come from the healthcare industry, with brands making elaborate claims about curing PCOS, IBS, aiding in weight reduction, combating hair fall, and improving performance, among other things. Many of these brands are endorsed by celebrities, adding to their appeal. Today, I want to show you how deceptive these claims can be and how they misuse science. At duuet, when we decided to build the nation's first social network for health, our primary goal was to create a safe digital space for people to discuss health issues without being targeted by products based on fake science. Most of these brands use statistics to deceive consumers in ways that can be very convincing at first glance. Here is an example of one such brand (unnamed to highlight that this is an industry-wide issue, not just a single case). They used the following tactics in their clinical trial: 1. No Control Group: Without a control or placebo group, it's difficult to attribute the observed effects solely to the treatment. The placebo effect can be significant in studies related to health and wellness, including those involving hair loss. 2. Blinding Issues: The study does not mention whether it was blinded. Blinding (both single and double) is crucial in clinical trials to prevent bias. When participants and researchers know who is receiving the treatment, it can influence the results. 3. Small Sample Size: The study involved only 21 participants, which is too small for drawing robust conclusions. Small sample sizes can lead to statistical anomalies and are less likely to be representative of the broader population. 4. Self-Reporting of Results: Participants collected their own lost hair and reported it. Self-reporting can introduce bias and inaccuracies, as participants might unintentionally or intentionally misreport their data. 5. Short Duration: The study lasted only two months. Hair growth and loss are long-term processes, and a longer study period would provide more reliable data on the treatment’s effectiveness. 6. Conflict of Interest: The study was conducted by Mibelle Biochemistry, which might have a vested interest in positive outcomes for their product. This potential conflict of interest needs to be managed carefully to ensure unbiased results. These issues highlight the importance of critically evaluating health claims and the studies that support them.
