CRIA is delighted that the approved phase 1 list of sectoral scope under the offset mechanism includes a wide range of sectors and methods; and particularly #durable carbon removal method #Biochar; and nature based solutions such as agroforestry and SRI. This is the first acknowledgement and inclusion of any #CDR methods under the #ICM regime. It will send a strong signal to Indian corporate sector to look at biochar specifically and also CDR generally with greater interest to invest in – both as developers / suppliers and buyers. Eventually other CDR methods such as Enhanced Rock Weathering (#ERW) should also be included; resulting into scaling up for the sector. India has great potential in becoming a global powerhouse in CDR; that will help accelerate net zero targets, while offering co-benefits to improve soil health, crop productivity and ecosystem restoration. It is highlighted that biochar is part of India's green steel transition. By 2030 and beyond, biochar is expected to be scaled up as an alternative to coal in steel production. Biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from organic waste, can help reduce emissions when used in steelmaking processes. This aligns with broader decarbonisation efforts, including green hydrogen and carbon capture technologies, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero emissions in the steel industry by 2070! #Sustainability #NetZero #ClimateChange #Biochar #SteelIndustry #CDR #CarbonRemoval

India’s ambition to be a top 3 economy comes with a big price tag: infrastructure—and lots of it. 🏗️ That means a surge in steel production, the backbone of our bridges, cars, and skyscrapers. 🚗🏢 But here’s the flip side: the steel industry accounts for 10-12% of India’s total emissions, largely because it’s still heavily reliant on coal, with emissions per ton of steel at 2.54 tCO2. So, how do we fuel our growth without fueling climate change? 🌍🔥 The Ministry of Steel has a plan. And it’s not just about cutting emissions—it’s about transforming the entire industry. Let’s dig into it! 👇 ▶ Defining Green Steel: Setting a clear and practical definition for “green steel” to create standards that the industry can aim for and measure against. This helps companies benchmark their emissions and find pathways to reduce them. ▶ Decarbonization Levers: Boosting energy efficiency, increasing renewable energy usage, and adopting new technologies like green hydrogen and carbon capture. ▶ Task Forces: Establishing 1️⃣ 4️⃣ task forces, each focused on different aspects of the transition—from defining green steel to monitoring CO2 emissions and developing the necessary skills within the workforce. ▶ The Industry Roadmap: A comprehensive guide for the industry, covering everything from immediate actions to long-term goals, ensuring every player knows their role in the journey to greener steel. Key Timelines and Targets 🚀 : ✔ 2025: Establish a clear definition for green steel and set up an MRV framework for CO2 emissions. ✔2025-2030: Achieve 45% renewable energy penetration and pilot green hydrogen and CCUS technologies. ✔2030 and Beyond: Scale biochar utilization, green hydrogen steelmaking, and advanced CCUS to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. The roadmap isn’t just a set of guidelines—it’s a step-by-step guide for the industry.

🌍 Scaling Carbon Removal in Emerging Markets Scaling CDR is emerging markets is not just compelling from an impact perspective, but critically, it is a savvy business opportunity (At Opna are are obviously biased as we are fully bought in) Last week, at #CDRCopenhagen I was joined by Jakob Bejbro Andersen from MASH Makes, Marian Krueger from remove and Tom Mills from Carbon Removal India Alliance (CRIA) to talk about their work in scaling CDR in emerging markets, with a particular focus on India. So, why should we be excited about CDR in emerging markets? Jakob, Marian, and Tom shared some key insights: ✅ Entrepreneurial talent & #Jugaad: Emerging markets (EM) are brimming with resourceful, entrepreneurial, and skilled technical folks. Look up Jugaad if you’re unfamiliar – it’s a perfect description of the innovation mindset in these regions. ✅ Natural carbon sinks: These regions boast abundant natural resources ideal for carbon sequestration. ✅ Impact investments: As buyers and investors increasingly focus on the broader impacts of their carbon interventions (e.g., community benefits, biodiversity), emerging market projects stand out as the "additional" place to invest. ✅ Early-mover advantage: With the potential for faster cost curve reductions, investing in CDR in EM offers diversification and could generate higher returns for early movers. So, what's missing? ❓ Domestic demand signals for CDR within these markets ❓ A well developed capital stack, from VC to infrastructure funding ❓ A clear policy landscape (though that’s a global challenge!) Climate justice considerations for CDR in emerging markets: 🎯 Local leadership: It's crucial to ensure meaningful, informed participation of local stakeholders. CRIA's CEO is Indian (based in India), Remove's Program Manager is Indian (based in India), and two of Jakob’s co-founders are Indian. 🎯 Cultural humility: No two emerging markets are the same. While lessons can be shared, it's essential to respect local context and keep learning. One final reflection: It wasn’t lost on me—or to Jakob, Marian, and Tom—that we were standing in Denmark, discussing Emerging markets and climate justice with a panel made of mostly men, with European roots. I am so happy to share that climate justice and climate equity is a critical aspect all three think actively about- in how and with who they build their businesses , and are open to learning and being challenged on. This is the kind of humility we need as we build a new, equitable industry from the ground up. Thank you to Carbon Removal Partners, Innovation Centre Denmark and other amazing organisations for the invitations. #CarbonRemoval #EmergingMarkets #ClimateAction #ImpactInvesting #ClimateJustice

We tossed our request into the LinkedIn universe, and the outcome was spot on! We asked people to help us pick a name for our Carbon Removal Summit, to be precise - South Asia’s First Carbon Removal Summit. Dr Mark Osborne gave us 'Carbon Reset' and we loved it. Wait, but why reset? Well, what do you think when someone says Reset? Probably ‘back to zero’? That’s it. Carbon removal is a means to get to Net ‘Zero’. So now! We’re thrilled to announce Carbon Reset, a Carbon Removal Summit on October 8th, 2024 at the Museum of Solutions, Mumbai. It’s hosted by: IIT Bombay Research Hub for Green Energy and Sustainability (GESH IITB) and CarbonCrew In partnership with: The Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation remove (backers of 120 CDR startups), and Carbon Removal India Alliance (CRIA). And the amazing folks at AirMiners, Neufin, and climateXcapital are our ecosystem partners. Who Will Be There? CDR entrepreneurs, startups, existing and potential capital allocators, researchers, policymakers, and ecosystem enablers. Consider this your invite, we would love to see you there. You could register your interest in Carbon Reset via the link in the comments :) #CDR #carbonremoval #climatetech #deeptech
