  • 🌍 Harnessing the Power of Enhanced Rock Weathering: Opportunities and Challenges 🌍   We’re excited to share key insights from Carbon Direct’s latest report on Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) as a promising pathway for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). The potential of ERW lies in its ability to leverage natural geochemical processes for carbon sequestration, offering numerous co-benefits. India's unique combination of favourable climate conditions characterized by heat and humidity, geological resources (with one of the world’s largest volcanic provinces - the Deccan Traps), and a wealth of technical expertise positions it as a global leader in the deployment of ERW. The path forward for ERW is filled with potential but requires careful, responsible scaling to maximize benefits while minimizing risks. Here are the key takeaways: Key Findings: 1. Carbon Sequestration Potential: ERW can deliver large volumes of durable, cost-effective carbon removals, contributing significantly to climate mitigation efforts. 2. Agricultural Benefits: Besides carbon capture, ERW enhances crop yields and reduces the need for agricultural amendments, making it a win-win for both the environment and agriculture. 3. Market Insights: Current market analysis indicates that buyer involvement is crucial for scaling ERW projects and advancing scientific understanding. Opportunities: - Investment and Scaling: There's a need for strong buyer signals to drive investment and market development, enhancing the overall effectiveness and scalability of ERW projects. - Research and Development: Continued research is essential to refine carbon accounting methods and address uncertainties related to ERW's impact. Challenges: - Risks and Uncertainties: Key risks include potential environmental and human health impacts from mineral feedstocks, such as heavy metals, and the challenge of accurately quantifying carbon removal. - Regulatory and Monitoring Needs: Implementing stringent protocols for measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification is critical to ensure the reliability and safety of ERW projects. Final Recommendations: - Conservative Approaches: Buyers should make informed decisions, considering risk mitigation strategies and remaining uncertainties. - Support for Best Practices: Encourage the adoption of best practices and rigorous environmental monitoring to address potential risks effectively. CRIA founding member, Mati Carbon, is spearheading the development of this remarkable opportunity in India. #ClimateAction #CarbonSequestration #ERW #CarbonRemoval #CDR #Agriculture --- For a detailed read, check out the full report: https://lnkd.in/gXG3CkaC

🌟 Milestone Alert 🌟 We are thrilled to announce the successful removal of our first 1,000 kgs of carbon from the atmosphere through Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW), a landmark achievement in the field of permanent #CO2 #removal (#CDR) from the Global South. This milestone highlights our commitment to fighting #climatechange while supporting local communities in India’s tea industry. It also showcases the Global South's leadership in creating innovative solutions crucial for achieving the Paris Agreement’s #NetZero goals. Thanks to #India’s perfect temperatures, monsoon patterns, feedstock availability, and soil acidity, we've achieved some of the lowest costs for permanent CO2 removal in the world. Our goal is to permanently remove 5 million tons of CO2 annually by 2030 through our enhanced weathering methods, focusing on the Indian tea industry. This milestone is a testament to the significant impact we're making in CO2 removal and crop yield improvement for our farm partners. A proud moment for our entire team! 💪🌍 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Innovation #NetZero #GlobalSouth #EnvironmentalStewardship #ERW

  • In our journey toward sustainability, it’s crucial to understand the differences between carbon management strategies, including CO2 reduction/avoidance, Point Source #CCUS, and #CDR (#CarbonDioxideRemoval). 🔹 CO2 Reduction/Avoidance focuses on minimising carbon emissions during economic activities. It’s about being proactive in reducing the amount of carbon that enters the atmosphere from the start. 🔹 Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) mainly targets high-concentration CO2 sources like industrial chimneys. This method is essential for capturing emissions at the point of release and is part of the broader emissions reduction strategy. 🔹 CDR, on the other hand, is groundbreaking as it involves the direct removal of CO2 from the atmosphere, where concentrations are more dilute. This method is vital for actively reversing the existing atmospheric CO2 levels. It’s important to recognise that while emissions reductions through strategies like CCUS are measurable and impactful, the role of CDR in our #climate strategy is equally crucial as it deals with CO2 that has already made its way to the atmosphere. Each approach has its place in our fight against #climatechange, and understanding these differences helps in aligning our strategies more effectively with our sustainability goals. This explainer from Alt Carbon is a great place to start! #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Innovation #CarbonManagement
