Presenting AD India’s July-August print issue: A celebration of the exquisite craft of brass repoussage. AD India has a brief but bright history of print cover innovations. In the tradition of the 2018 “concrete cover” and a series of textile covers over the years, we now explore the exquisite craft of brass repoussage. A special innovation cover, designed by the brilliant Vikram Goyal, graces the annual July-August 2024 Craftsmanship issue. In the two decades of his practice, Goyal has drawn a world out of diverse tapestries: from nature to art deco to chinoiserie to pichvais. For AD’s cover he finds inspiration in the Jantar Mantar—spot the lines, arches and steps of the iconic monument in this abstract cover creative. “Rooted in Indian legacy and science, a timeless work, unique to our land,” Vikram says. Once the design was sketched, it was printed and pasted on a malleable brass sheet, and the studio’s master craftsmen created the repoussé or relief pattern. Until one day, an actual, solid, heavy brass sample—precisely the size of an AD cover—arrived at our offices. It was then rendered in an emboss-deboss paper innovation technique to capture the touch-feel, shadows and contours of the original brass sample by the talented production team of Condé Nast India. For AD, as a publication, as a magazine that believes definitively in craftsmanship, this cover is a reminder of the beauty that lives in our karkhanas and studios, the beauty of things made by hand that are physical and tactile but inherently spiritual. Long live hand craftsmanship, and long live print. Words: Komal Sharma Art Director: Chandni Mehta
