The Grand Opening Ceremony of the International Chess Federation Chess Olympiad 2024 took place yesterday at the Jeno Koltai Sports Center in Budapest! The highlight of the ceremony was the lighting of the ceremonial torch - which was carried through the streets of Budapest by none other than Judit Polgar. The two other Polgar sisters - Susan and Sofia came on the stage for the drawing of lots! Singers Lilla Vincze and Jason Kouchak performed various songs to serenade the spectators. It's time for the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest The Games are officially opened today and action starts from tomorrow This one is to have you all covered with the basics 1️⃣ Format: 11 Matches per team with 4 players for each team and a reserve 2️⃣ Time Control: Swiss Classic, 1.5 hrs for the 1st 40 moves, and 30 minutes for the reminder of the tie 30 seconds Increment starting from Move 1 3️⃣ Scoring: For each tie, 1 for a Win, 0.5 for a draw, 0 for a loss For each match, team with the highest aggregate of the individual tie points win and gets 2 points, it's 1 point for a draw and 0 for losing the match; this is referred to as the Match Points 4️⃣ Medal Distribution: The Top 3 teams with the highest aggregate of Match Points bag the 🥇,🥈,🥉in the team event For the Individual Boards, a player needs to play minimum 8 matches and the medals are awarded according to the Performance Rating for each player on the board 5️⃣ Indian Team: Seeded 2nd in the Open and 1st in the Women's Section with an avg team rating of 2755 & 2458 respectively Open Section: GMs Arjun Erigaisi, D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, Pentala Harikrishna Women Section: GMs Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, IM Divya Deshmukh, WGMs Tania Sachdev, Vantika Agarwal 6️⃣ Major Players in the Top Board: Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Arjun Erigaisi, Anish Giri, Nodirbek Abusattarov That's a quick brief of the event.
