The Shakti microprocessors marked India's foray into indigenous semiconductor manufacturing, featuring RISC-V architecture and initially developed at 180 nm nodes in SCL, Mohali, before advancing to 22 nm nodes at Intel's Oregon plant. Despite starting at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 2014 to reduce dependency on imported chips, Shakti hasn't yet gained commercial traction. This is partly due to RISC-V's nascent stage and the dominance of Arm and x86 architectures. Additionally, the Shakti project was more academic than commercial. However, companies like Mindgrove Technologies and InCore Semiconductors, born from this ecosystem, are making strides with their own microprocessors. Mindgrove, incubated at IIT-M, is launching the MG Secure IoT chip, aiming to replace imported chips and offering robust support to early adopters. Competing with established players like Texas Instruments and facing cheaper Chinese alternatives, Mindgrove focuses on scaling production to remain price-competitive. Success hinges on gaining trust and providing industry-leading products, with the hope of market entry by early 2025. T.R. Shashwath

LangChain, once a PyTorch-level game-changer for integrating LLMs, now faces criticism for its outdated documentation and complex abstractions. Despite recent partnerships with Ollama and incorporating Mistral Large, developers are wary of its usability in production. The rise of smaller, open-source models like GPT-4o mini and Llama 3.1 offers more flexibility, pushing companies to build AI agents from scratch. Alternatives like LlamaIndex are gaining traction, but LangChain promises improvements and better adaptability. Is LangChain losing its charm, or just hitting a rough patch? Read more 👇
