Akhand Jyoti works towards eliminating curable blindness from low-income geographies and empowers underprivileged girls.

About us

1 out of 3 blind people in the world live in India, and low-income states like Bihar share a significant burden of this population. Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital (Akhand Jyoti) started with a Vision to help eliminate curable blindness by providing in low-income regions of India affordable, accessible, sustainable, quality curative and preventive eye care services, and empower women to achieve this. The first goal is to make the state of Bihar blind-free by 2026. Starting in 2006, our approach to specifically target and reach out to the poor, blind patients from rural areas has made us one of the top 5 eye hospitals in India. Our belief that we are not merely an eye hospital but a platform for ushering bigger societal change in local communities propelled our differentiator - we eliminate blindness by empowering women in the process. Therefore, Akhand Jyoti not only restores sight (and thereby income and dignity) to the most deprived sections of society but also incorporates an active gender equality programme aimed at empowering women & girls in strong patriarchies. We also intend to establish the world’s first Centre of Excellence in eye care in a rural area (in Bihar of course), thereby bringing speciality world-class treatment to the doorsteps of the most deprived sections of our population. In summary: - We are currently doing over 93,000 eye surgeries while treating 700,000 people each year. 80% of these are provided free of charge to people unable to afford the treatment cost. - Akhand Jyoti aims to quadruple its operational capacity so that it can spearhead the efforts to restore sight to 2 million people - Under our unique “Football to Eyeball” programme, village girls are encouraged to play football and trained to qualify as Optometrists professionally. This empowers local girls to cure blindness and to make a broader societal impact in a very patriarchal society. - After 2026, Akhand Jyoti expects to expand its operations in other poor states of India.

  • Another proud achievement for #AkhandJyoti! Six of our talented young players—Samma Parveen, Sabana Khatoon, Lucky Kumari, Srishti Kumari, Raushani Kumari, and Riya Kumari, all aged 12-13—have been selected for the Under-14 Football League! Since joining the Akhand Jyoti Arush Football Academy last year, these girls have been training under Coach Rajan Singh, combining their passion for football with a strong commitment to education. As part of our #Vision2030, we are steadfast in our commitment to empowering girls through sports and education. These six will now advance to train for the inter-district match, proudly representing the Saran district. 'Football to Eyeball' Girls' Education programme is a unique initiative empowering rural Bihar girls through football and education. It challenges gender norms and draws girls out of their homes. It combines sports with vocational training in optometry. This comprehensive program aims to create #socialchangeagents and develop girls as leaders, all while working to eliminate #curableblindness from rural, low-income areas. • In the quiet village of Sarnarayan, Bihar, Asarfi Devi lived a life full of colour and fragrance as a florist. However, as cataracts dimmed her vision, her flower shop—once a source of joy and income—became a symbol of her lost livelihood. Unable to distinguish the colours of her flowers, she struggled to maintain her business, and her role as the family's provider slipped away. She relied on her young grandchild to guide her through daily tasks, feeling the sting of helplessness with every step. But hope arrived when Akhand Jyoti visited her village for a free eye screening camp and provided her with cataract surgery at no cost. Akhand Jyoti's mission is not just to restore sight but to restore lives. Our approach targets the root causes of blindness and the socio-economic struggles that accompany it, particularly in rural India. This is more than just a medical intervention—it's a chance to make a lasting impact, turning despair into hope and dependence into independence. Supporting Akhand Jyoti means joining a transformative journey—one that not only heals eyes but also mends lives, empowers women, and lifts entire communities out of the shadows of poverty. In the heart of rural Mastichak, Bihar, football isn't just a game—it's a catalyst for change. For many girls, football has become their gateway to empowerment and social transformation. Through Akhand Jyoti's innovative #FootballtoEyeball Girls Education Programme, football serves as more than just recreation. It's an ice-breaker that draws girls out of their homes, sheds their inhibitions, and ignites their potential to become change agents in their communities. These girls, once confined by societal norms, now stand tall as players on state and national platforms. Beyond the field, they are also future optometrists, driving forward Akhand Jyoti's mission to eliminate curable blindness. Their journey isn't just about kicking a ball; it's about breaking barriers, gaining education, and transforming lives. Today, as we celebrate #NationalSportsDay, we salute these courageous girls who have embraced football not only as a sport but as a tool for empowerment and social impact. They embody the spirit of resilience, teamwork, and ambition, showing us all what is possible when passion meets purpose. Join us in honouring their journey and celebrating the power of sports to change lives! #EmpowerGirls #FootballForChange #AkhandJyoti
