    Total Solids measurement in water sample 💦 1. Collect a representative water sample in a clean and sterilized container. Make sure to avoid any contamination during the collection process. 2. Determine the total suspended solids (TSS) by filtering a known volume (V) of the sample through a pre-weighed filter paper (W1). Dry the filter paper at a specified temperature (105 °C) until a constant weight is obtained (W2). Calculate the TSS concentration using the formula: TSS = ((W2-W1) / volume of sample) x 10⁶ = ppm. 3. Determine the total dissolved solids (TDS) by evaporating a known volume (V) of the sample in a pre-weighed dish (W1) until all the water has evaporated. Dry the dish at a specified temperature (180 °C) until a constant weight is obtained (W2). Calculate the TDS concentration using the formula: TDS = ((W2-W1) / volume of sample) x 10⁶ = ppm. 4. Determine the volatile suspended solids (VSS) by filtering a known volume of the sample through a pre-weighed filter paper and then igniting the dried filter paper at a high temperature (550 °C) until the organic matter is completely burnt off. Calculate the VSS concentration using the formula: VSS = (dry weight of VSS / volume of sample) x 10⁶. 5. Determine the fixed suspended solids (FSS) by subtracting the VSS from the TSS concentration: FSS = TSS - VSS. 6. Determine the volatile dissolved solids (VDS) by subtracting the fixed dissolved solids from the TDS concentration: VDS = TDS - FDS. 7. Determine the fixed dissolved solids (FDS) by subtracting the VDS from the TDS concentration: FDS = TDS - VDS. 8. Calculate the total solids concentration by summing up the TSS and TDS concentrations: Total solids (TS) = TSS TDS. 9. Perform a quality control check by comparing the results with known standards and repeat the analysis if necessary. 10.
