This London firm of music sellers and publishers operated from 1833 to 1851. They took over the long-standing publisher Preston & Son. Their output included a number of important works, including many of Handel’s works originally issued by Walsh, Randall and others. After John Hollier left the partnership in 1849, Novello bought up some of the plates. Charles Coventry continued the business alone until 1851; at the sale of his stock-in-trade, Joseph Alfred Novello bought 4,780 plates of sacred works.
Coventry & Hollier were closely connected with Mendelssohn. They commissioned his organ sonatas, which were printed both in London and in Leipzig (Breitkopf und Härtel) in 1845.
