Over the course of 50 years living with #EssentialTremor, Surrey native Mary Hapgood’s symptoms slowly worsened, and simple tasks like eating and drinking became stressful. Working with the team at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust's National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, she finally found relief from her tremor with #FocusedUltrasound. "How does #FocusedUltrasound work?” This is a question you may ask yourself when you come across our posts. More than 10 million people live with #EssentialTremor, and #FUS is an innovative treatment that is available at treatment centers across the country. Focused ultrasound uses sound waves to “ablate” or alter specific brain tissue responsible for causing the tremor, which can lessen tremor frequency and strength. Patients actually stay awake during #FUS treatment. During the procedure, the surgical team asks the patient to perform tasks with their hand, such as drawing a spiral, to monitor progress in tremor improvement. We love to share before and after photos of the spirals on our social channels! Pretty cool, right? And even better, focused ultrasound for essential tremor is covered by most major insurance plans, including Medicare.
