Today marks the start of Maternal Mental Health Week, organised by the @perinatalmhpartnership Today we want to ‘Start the conversation about perinatal mental health’ What is perinatal mental health? The terms perinatal and maternal are often used interchangeably. ‘Peri’ is the Latin for “around”, and ‘natal’ is the Latin for “birth”. So perinatal mental health refers to a woman’s mental health during pregnancy and the first years after birth and loss. This includes mental illness that existed before pregnancy, as well as illnesses that develop for the first time or are greatly exacerbated in the perinatal period. Examples of perinatal mental health problems include antenatal and/or postnatal depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, postpartum psychosis and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These illnesses can be mild, moderate or severe, requiring different kinds of care. Our support programs help you to understand, heal from and manage some of the common fallouts experienced during your pregnancy, postpartum and motherhood journey including should you have experienced perinatal trauma and loss. The All Parliamentary Group on Birth Trauma has today published its #BirthTraumaInquiry report. It makes a series of recommendations to end a "postcode lottery" in #MaternityCare. Recommendations include: ❕ Better education for women on birth choices. ❕ Respecting mothers' choices. ❕ Providing support for fathers. ❕ A commitment to tackling inequalities in maternity care. These experiences mirror those reported in our Maternity Decisions survey, published in December 2021: https://lnkd.in/ez6-qvpS We believe accessible, appropriate #HealthInformation can help mothers make informed decisions about their care. PIF is currently working on two projects to help tackle #HealthInequalities in maternity care. We are using a #CoProduction approach to create new information for the Sussex Integrated Care System and supporting Damibu Ltd with a Phase 2 project researching hyper-local information. PIF also continues to raise awareness of the need for effective, representative #UserEngagement, #PlainLanguage and materials in a range of formats. We hope the results of this inquiry will help to raise awareness of the need for urgent action to improve birth experiences for all.
