Nominated: Bristol’s One City - connected through smart lighting Bristol’s connected lighting project, part of its One City Plan and powered by Urbis Schréder’s EXEDRA platform, has been nominated for a Build Back Better Award in the 2024 lighting category. Bristol's smart and connected agenda emphasises collaboration, which is central to its vision and strategy outlined in the 2050 One City Plan launched in 2014.  The 2050 One City Plan focuses on place-based leadership, community involvement, and co-production, aiming to shape the city's future across six themes aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  Driven by a wide range of public, private, voluntary, and third sector partners. transparency and open data are foundational to this plan, with information on 546 initiatives available in the One City Goals Dashboard and Open Data Bristol.  Bristol’s connected journey started in 2014 and as part of that had deployed some connected lanterns previously.  This experience informed their strategy and approach to upgrading the remaining LED lanterns and connecting the remaining lighting infrastructure to Urbis Schréder’s EXEDRA platform.  Key objectives included energy and carbon savings, fast deployment realising immediate energy savings and stringent cybersecurity requirements.  The key driver for the project was decarbonisation, with 29,000 new LED lanterns and the repurposing of 5,000 existing LED lanterns all controlled via CMS.  The project initially planned for 70 lantern variations with multiple calendars but the joint approach refined this to nine functional types, three decorative types, and three existing lantern types, with 38 calendar variations.  By simplifying the physical element and planning the team behind the project was able to mobilise within five weeks and efficiently install up to 2,500 connected lanterns per month with minimal issues.  Data management and automation played a key role in the project. Lanterns were self-tested automatically, calendars applied and the new lantern data was auto-populated into the asset management system.  This meant Bristol was able to get the benefit of energy savings in real time. Using a common dataset to manage the end-to-end process allowed proactive management, tracking lantern installation, commissioning, provisioning, and project success.  This transparency emphasised openness, honesty, and a one-team mentality. Bristol currently have around 30,000 connected lanterns and has saved 56.1 tons of carbon, with an energy bill ruction of 55 per cent.  The collaborative approach to continuous improvement means that the savings realised are being re-invested in further optimising energy use through lighting on demand and integration of other technologies. • The Build Back Better Awards celebrates and rewards innovation, creativity, environmental leadership and social purpose in the built environment.

£1.7 Billion Edgware Town Centre Redevelopment Gets Green Light Ballymore has submitted an outline planning application for a £1.7 billion redevelopment of Edgware’s Broadwalk Shopping Centre, the bus station, and the garage. This ambitious project is in partnership with Places for London, Transport for London’s property company, which owns part of the area’s land. The transformative masterplan, designed by Howells, proposes delivering 3,365 new homes, including 1,150 affordable homes and 463 student accommodation spaces. A significant increase in green space for the town centre includes a new Deans Brook Nature Park, unlocking nearly five acres of land that has been inaccessible to the public for almost 100 years. To enhance the high street offering, the new town square and centre will more than double the existing commercial space and reintroduce a cinema, addressing the absence of the former Ritz cinema for over 20 years. Edgware’s daytime and mid-week economy will be strengthened by new office spaces and workspaces for small and medium businesses. Greener, Cleaner, and Closer to Nature The development will open up access to green space that has been closed off to the public for almost a century by creating the 4.7-acre Deans Brook Nature Park. Current scrubland will become a nature trail with wild planting, walking routes, seating, and play areas for the local community to relax and enjoy nature within the town centre.
