Very interesting Knowledge Transfer Ireland (KTI) event this week as they hosted a delegation from European Commission's DG Research and Innovation. The Commission were promoting four new codes of practice around how to create social and economic value from knowledge. The panel that I participated in was chaired by Joe Doyle and focussed on unlocking the value of knowledge transfer and related challenges for SMEs. Two points I raised were: 1️⃣ In Ireland we spend almost 3/4 of a billion on R&D in the academic sector, but much less than 1% of that on capturing, protecting and extracting value from the IP that emerges from that research. This is a huge wasted opportunity that forces the tech transfer offices to play a short term strategy in what is a long term game. ✅Dramatically increase and ring-fence the budget for IP protection ✅Incentivise researchers to patent and reduce barriers to doing so ✅Increase attractiveness of the licensing models to industry. 2️⃣ The Irish funding bodies and technology transfer offices are wrapped up in knots trying to ensure compliance with state-aid rules and this is creating challenges for SMEs. ✅The Commission needs to simplify the rules and lighten the touch, particularly for small companies who are not going to "distort markets". ✅KTI in turn should take a light touch approach to interpreting these rules when revising the National IP protocol - just as many other European countries do. So much great research going on in Ireland - but there's more we can do to extract maximum value from it.

Jerry very eloquently explaining to Claire, in plain language, the circular energy system/circular economy benefits and the 3 products of anaerobic digestion. - bio-methane (replacing fossil methane) - bio-fertiliser (replacing fertiliser from fossil fuels) - bio-genic CO2 (replacing conventionally produced CO2 ) The Danish experience also highlighted -where 39% of gas demand now met by biomethane from anaerobic digestion - real lessons for Ireland #eng4climate #biomethane

FDI in Ireland is now prepared to build the grid needed to get Ireland back in the Current Data/AI Led Innovation Age, get on with it Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) 🙏 after leading the world in the export of Data and Data related services, not only do we not make the shortlist, we don't even make the list for the current Data/AI-Enabled innovation age 🤷‍♂️ Datacentres are the "Canary In The Coalmine" in Ireland and FDI; if you cannot provide a clear and trustworthy plan without constant flip-flopping on the policy, you create Stagnation = Uncertainty = projects go someplace else for ICT-related services, Chip manufacture, pharmaceuticals and many other of the FDI industries which have dragged Ireland up from mainly exporting Live Cattle and People in the 1970's.
