It's not every day that you mark a 700 year anniversary, 1324 - 2024! The first written reference on the island of Ireland to ‘aqua vitae’ (Latin), ‘uisce beatha’ (Irish) or ‘whiskey’ (in English) is in a vellum manuscript, the #RedBookofOssory, from 1324. It is soon to go on show at St Canice's Cathedral and Round Tower, Kilkenny. The oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world is at #Bushmills, Antrim. Today there are 40 distilleries island-wide, with over 28 welcoming visitors. 800,000 people visit per year, the majority from overseas. The appeal is multi-faceted - beyond whiskey, there is the craft, heritage, storytelling, local ingredients, scenery in beautiful and historic locations across the island. At Tourism Ireland, we’re marking 700 years with a social and digital campaign reaching relevant audiences across 14 markets and focused on heritage and craft. With thanks to Eoin Ó Catháin, Gerry Ginty, June O'Connell and the Irish Whiskey Association who have brought together the #IrishWhiskey360 trail, to visitor experiences island wide for their work, St Canice’s Cathedral, as well as to Catherine Toolan for beautifully hosting last night's event to mark the moment at Roe & Co. We warmly welcome today’s announcement by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines that it will expand its Amsterdam to Belfast City Airport service to twice daily from October. As an island destination, we know there’s a proven direct correlation between access and growth in visitor numbers, so these additional flights will certainly help boost tourism business from the Netherlands to Northern Ireland. Tourism Ireland is actively working with KLM and Belfast City Airport to drive demand for this service. We value collaboration with our key air and sea partners to bring overseas visitors to Northern Ireland.

We were thrilled to be joined by four tourism companies from the island of Ireland in Fort Lauderdale in Florida last week for the annual Global Travel Marketplace (GTM). The event offers an excellent opportunity to connect with and present to top-producing travel advisors from North America who bring valuable tourists to the island – ensuring Ireland is ‘top of mind’ for the travel advisors when recommending destinations to their clients.

Fantastic double-page spread on Northern Ireland in Diario ABC Viajar, a national newspaper in Spain, by Javier Carrión – who travelled to Northern Ireland this spring on the direct easyJet flight from Barcelona to Belfast. The article will reach more than 126,000 Spaniards, or potential holidaymakers for Northern Ireland. #TourismIreland #TourismNorthernIreland
