The travel and tourism industry accounts for 10% of global GDP and employs 320 million people, but it also contributes to 8% of global carbon emissions. Taking this into consideration, this article outlines the ways in which different tourism sectors can meaningfully mitigate and reverse climate collapse. Here are a few interesting highlights: 🛎 Hospitality sector: Although all key hospitality players have embraced the ESG (environment, social and governance) model, they will need further support from smaller franchisees and REITS (real estate investment trusts) to get the necessary investments for technical adjustments to their buildings and operations. ✈ Aviation sector: 2 main opportunities present themselves for the aviation industry: 1) Investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from food, oil waste and biomass and 2) Electric and hybrid planes. Although these opportunities are still a work in progress, it is said that they will become more efficient by 2035 🛳 Tour operators and tourism distribution channels: All important actors of this sector should continue including sustainability criteria in their programs and platforms. As we celebrate Youth Skills Day at Sustainable Tourism Consultants, we want to highlight a few ways in which we can empower young people who wish to, or are currently working in the tourism industry: 1️⃣ Helping them develop soft skills: Soft skills such as problem-solving, communication, #teamwork and cultural sensitivity are crucial for anyone who wishes to work in the tourism industry. To develop these skills, it is essential to provide the youth with #trainingprograms and workshops that focus on soft skill improvement. 2️⃣ Emphasizing language proficiency: Multilingual skills enhance the ability of young people to communicate effectively with a diverse clientele. It’s important for us to promote language learning programs and courses that help young people develop proficiency in multiple languages so they are able to properly communicate with different tourism stakeholders. 3️⃣ Promoting digital skills training: In the digital world that we live in today, it’s crucial to acquire the necessary #digitalskills to navigate the tourism industry. We need to empower our youth to be proficient in digital skills, including but not limited to website management, digital marketing, booking management systems and #digitalcommunication tools. 4️⃣ Providing networking experiences: We need to facilitate networking opportunities that pair young people with experienced professionals in the tourism industry. Some of these #networkingopportunities include industry events, conferences, and online platforms. A well-planned networking event allows young people to not only experience, but be exposed to #tourismexperts and share ideas and insights. 5️⃣ Encouraging entrepreneurship training: Young people are the future leaders for a #sustainabletourism sector, and we should encourage them to start their own tourism-related business. Workplace experience, mentorship and #entrepreneurship courses are vital and through training on courses such as business planning, financial management and marketing strategies, we can encourage the youth to contribute to the ever-growing tourism sector. #SustainableTourismConsultants #WorldYouthSkillsDay #TheYouthIsFuture #InvestInOurYouth

🔔 The results of the 2025 European Green City awards are in: #Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, has been named the 2025 European Green Capital Winner, and #Viladecans (Spain) and #Treviso (Italy) the European Green Leaf 2025 for smaller cities. 💡 The #EuropeanCommission established the "European Green Capital Award" and the "European Green Leaf Award" with the goal of promoting greener and cleaner cities that will enhance the lives of their residents. 🏙 The awards honors cities, big and small, that have demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing the ambitious objectives of the European Green Deal, particularly the Biodiversity Strategy, the Zero Pollution Action Plan, and the Circular Economy Action Plan. Vilnius has effectively decreased emissions through a number of strategies, including expanding its use of #renewableenergy sources and updating its heating infrastructure in order to achieve #climateneutrality by 2030.
