There are limited tickets left for 'Tracking a Plant Killer: Historical and Scientific Reflections on the Irish Famine Pathogen', a dynamic public lecture that explores both Irish history and science. Visiting Fulbright Scholar, Professor Jean Ristaino (North Carolina State University) will discuss the Irish Famine pathogen in the Royal Irish Academy on Tuesday, 20 August at 6:30pm. Professor Ristaino’s lecture will describe the famine years like a crime scene, investigating the victims and the culprits, and shining a light on the many detectives or ‘Sherlocks of Spuds’ who worked to identify the suspected pathogen, suggest remedies and crack the case. Modern DNA technology has helped us track the identity of the original outbreak strain and its global migration. 'In 1824, teams of surveyors began to map Ireland, making it the first place in the world to have detailed ordnance survey maps for an entire country. Now, 200 years later, these 6in to a mile maps, books of placenames, memoirs and letters have been brought together in an open-access digital archive for researchers and members of the public.' Visiting Fulbright Scholar, Professor Jean Ristaino (North Carolina State University) will deliver a lecture on the subject of the Irish Famine pathogen. This lecture will explore the migrations and spread of the pathogen Phytophthora infestans which entered the shores of Ireland in 1845 and devastated the potato crop. The pathogen left devastation in its wake: a country of eight million lost one quarter of its population to death and emigration. The population of Ireland would never rebound.
