The Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Act 2024 (the "Act") which aims to increase protections for students in private rental accommodation has now been commenced. The Act applies to student specific accommodation leases and licences created on or after 20 July 2024. One of the key changes in the Act means that the duration of student leases or licences must now align with the standard academic year of September to May, a maximum of 41 weeks. Students can still request a longer tenancy where required – for example, those students undertaking postgraduate courses running for a 12 month period. In our last update, Commercial Real Estate partner Karen Sheil and professional support lawyer Noreen Kavanagh provided an overview of all the changes introduced in the Act and the implications for both landlords and tenants. In April of this year, we were proud to announce the opening of The Matheson Creativity Hub in Memory of Tim Scanlon, at the IMMA - Irish Museum of Modern Art. Today, we are delighted to announce that the Matheson Creativity Hub has been shortlisted for the CBRE Major Arts Partnership at the 2024 Business to Arts Awards. Delivered as part of the arts pillar of Matheson’s Impactful Business Programme, The Matheson Creativity Hub in Memory of Tim Scanlon underlines our commitment to diversity and inclusion, and providing access to the arts for people of all ages and backgrounds. As former Chairperson of Matheson and IMMA Board Member (2016 – 2020), Tim was an important influence on IMMA’s thinking and he encouraged progressive programming and change-making conversations that placed community engagement and inclusivity at the heart of the Museum’s activities. We look forward to the awards which will take place at the National Concert Hall on Monday 9 September.
