  • Excited to share that our Vice Chair Pietro Pampili participated in the inaugural Irish Data Stewardship Network Sonraí conference on June 19-20 at University College Cork. Funded by National Open Research Forum, #Sonraí aims to foster the creation of a national data stewardship network, which is one of the key priority for Ireland's transition towards Open Research. During the two days, experts, stakeholders, funders, and infrastructure providers have discussed on how to promote adoption of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and Open Data within the Irish research landscape. • 🌟 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐜𝐂𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐲 🌟 🎓 Introducing 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐜𝐂𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐲, a passionate researcher from Glasgow Caledonian University, specializing in Psychology and Public Health.   🌍 In this feature, 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐧 shares her experiences with the mobility aspect of the MSCA ITN program, detailing her journey across academic and industry sectors and what she learned along the way.   🚀 Her Own Words on Her Journey: “  𝐌𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 As an early-stage researcher within the Health CASCADE Innovative Training Network, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to work across different institutions, recognizing the value that diverse perspectives could bring to my research. Driven by a desire to collaborate with existing colleagues and forge new connections, I embarked on two international collaborations—one in academia and the other in industry. My academic collaboration was the first stop, landing me in vibrant Barcelona, Spain, where I was based at Blanquerna, Ramon Llull University. With sunshine, a beautiful office, and supportive colleagues, I settled in comfortably. This ideal environment fostered productive research and co-working. I had the opportunity to present my work and connect with new researchers over lunch and coffee, enriching my network and sparking new ideas. I then transitioned to an industry collaboration in a Belgian company. This experience was markedly different from my time in academia, as it involved adapting to a new structure and industry-specific terminology. The fast-paced, results-oriented environment of the industry pushed me to apply my knowledge practically and efficiently. This opportunity offered me insights into the corporate world and expanded my professional skill set. These experiences broadened my understanding of the interplay between academic research and industry applications and enhanced my adaptability and resilience. ”

  • 🎉 Huge Congratulations to Guido Giunti on winning The MCAA Best Innovator Award 2023! 🎉 We're incredibly proud of Guido Giunti for being honored at the #MCAA2024 . Although our congratulations come a bit late, our pride is immense! Guido shared with us his feelings about winning this award and his vision for the future of digital health: "Digital health is a field that has been growing and ever redefining its scope since its very beginning. One of the main challenges that we are seeing right now is how do we avoid digitalization of healthcare and go towards a true digital transformation. We need to take a more inclusive approach to make it so that people are not just passive actors who receive technology but actually become participants of the design, development and deployment of these technologies." Way to go, Guido! Your dedication and vision are an inspiration to us all.

✨ Just two more to go! Next up in our #MSCAinIreland series is Dr James Little, formerly of University College Dublin, whose research is on literary representation of coercive confinement in Irish history. James shares his experience of doing a #MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ireland. ☘ 👇 🔷 How has the MSCA fellowship impacted on your skills development and career prospects? 🔸 As well as developing research-specific skills by working with experts in UCD, I gained intersectoral skills through collaboration with state broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), where I developed the skills necessary to explore the key role that different media have played in shaping Ireland's carceral memory, and the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI), where I have been recording a podcast series and developing a digital exhibition on confinement for use in second- and third-level educational institutions. Key to podcasting is the ability to listen. Recording the podcast has enabled me to learn to listen to the stories of those who have been coercively confined, as well as learning not to make assumptions on what an interviewee's experience of confinement may have been. This is ongoing work, which will continue beyond the completion of the project. During my MSCA Fellowship, I secured a job at the University of Cyprus, which is evidence of the project's impact on my career prospects. 🔷 Why did you choose Ireland as the host country for your MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship? 🔸 University College Dublin had the best research environment for my project, with many experts on Irish institutional history and culture as well as my mentor (Emilie Pine) whose research profile made her ideally placed to supervise my work. Furthermore, the topic of my research meant that many of the archives I needed to access are in Ireland, many of the people I wished to interview live in Ireland, and the public I wished to engage are those who follow Irish cultural debate. All in all, being located in Ireland gave my project the best possible chance of success. 🔷 Do you have any advice for other early career researchers thinking of applying to the programme? 🔸 My advice would be: 1. Start early: give yourself the opportunity to revise the proposal multiple times and (if necessary) to make contact with partners outside academia. 2. Reach out to others: use your MSCA NCPs & ask successful applicants (drawn, if possible, from different fields) to share their proposals with you. And, seek out expertise around you. 3. Pace yourself: the application process is long, and you already have much else on your plate. So, give yourself the time necessary to revise your proposal in light of feedback from those responsible at your host institution. The 2024 MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships call deadline is 11/09/2024.
