As a supermarket buyer, the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), effective December 30, 2024, will significantly impact how you source products. Commodities like cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, and some of their derived products such as beef and chocolate, must now be deforestation-free, legally compliant, and backed by a due diligence statement. 👉 Key Compliance Requirements: 🔹 Deforestation-Free Criteria: Products must not originate from land deforested after December 31, 2020. 🔹 Due Diligence Process: 🔸 Information Collection: Gather detailed data, including geolocation, supplier details, and production country, to ensure products are linked to their specific origin and are deforestation-free. 🔸 Risk Assessment: Annually assess risks based on factors like deforestation history, country of origin, and supply chain issues. 🔸 Risk Mitigation: If risks are found, take corrective actions such as obtaining more documentation, conducting audits, or modifying supply chain practices. 🔹Reporting and Enforcement: 🔸Large companies are required to publicly report on their due diligence systems annually. 🔸Non-compliance may result in severe penalties, including fines and product confiscation. While these measures aim to ensure sustainability, they also present challenges that will need careful attention within supply chains. Supermarket buyers must ensure that all products, from raw commodities to finished goods, comply with the new standards. To assist with this transition, the European Commission will make available some dedicated training in the autumn. As the December 2024 deadline approaches, it's essential to prepare thoroughly to avoid penalties and ensure compliance across all product categories. #EUDR #Deforestation #SupplyChain #GroceryRetail

Our CEO, Mike McGrath, enjoyed an inspiring trip to #Paris for the Olympics and explored the latest #trends in French #supermarkets. Kwayga is excited to use these insights to help French grocery buyers optimise their sourcing processes and enhance market visibility across Europe.

e-Sourcing Expert; connecting the right buyer with the right supplier at the right time

It was wonderful to be in #Paris for the Olympics recently and witness first-hand the best of world sport competing on a global stage. The hardwork and determination of all athletes was inspirational, and well done to #TeamIreland on their outstanding results. A visit to France would not be complete without sampling the local cuisine and visiting supermarkets when abroad is always inspiring too. The 'bio' trend in France is really interesting with the focus on organic, clean and local produce. The main chains promote this well but some of the niche co-ops, despite a wider range, seem to be losing that footfall battle. Kwayga look forward to assisting French grocery buyers in the future, cutting their supplier sourcing times by 40% and increasing market visibility tenfold across Europe...

With so many B2B marketplaces cropping up at the moment, you might think that the biggest threat comes from competitor platforms… In reality, lots of marketplace founders agree that the real danger comes from traditional suppliers. As Mike McGrath (Kwayga) tells us, B2B buyers are hesitant to move away from these archaic forms of trade, even though – much like the bag of salad at the bottom of your fridge – they’re far past their expiry date 🥗 Hear more from Mike’s fireside chat with Hokodo’s Megan Cela by joining the B2B Marketplaces Knowledge Hub 👉 https://hubs.ly/Q02JpYHG0 #B2BMarketplaces #B2BMarketplace #FounderInterview #Competition #Competitor

Grocery retailers are increasingly adopting eco-friendly packaging solutions for their private-label ranges in response to evolving customer preferences and a growing focus on environmental sustainability. Check out some recent innovative packaging solutions: 🔹 Coop Sweden has transitioned its pasta sauce packaging from glass jars to Tetra Pak cartons, which will lower CO2 emissions by 80% and significantly reduce the supply chain footprint. The new packaging allows for 64% more items to be transported per pallet. "At Coop, we always review what we can do to continue to improve our responsibility, and evaluate what and where in the chain we can make improvements," commented Minna Björklund, EVM range manager at Coop Sweden, to ESM - European Supermarket Magazine. 🔹 Waitrose & Partners is introducing a circular recycling scheme for its own-label curries, using trays made from plastic collected through UK household recycling. Partnering with Wrap, Pilgrim’s Europe, and Faerch, this initiative aims to reduce virgin plastic use by employing already recycled plastic. The scheme will also enhance the lifecycle of high-quality PET through easily accessible kerbside recycling. “This is an exciting example of packaging innovation that helps us not only utilize plastic that is often devalued in the recycling process, but allow it to be reprocessed again and again,” said Denise Mathieson FIMMM, Waitrose packaging innovation & delivery manager, to The Grocer. 🔹 Jumbo Supermarkten in the Netherlands has introduced a new one-litre capless pack for its organic milk, expected to save over 9,000 kilograms of plastic and 23,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions annually. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce packaging across various categories, including pizza, Easter eggs, and salads, resulting in a total reduction of 58,000 kilograms of packaging material and 184,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions. The company has ensured that the new packaging maintains quality and convenience for shoppers. Ready to enhance your private-label range with sustainable packaging?
