Cartoonists can communicate serious water safety messages in a way that is palatable for a wider audience. This has real potential for translating behavioural messages in impactful ways that draw both the emotion and attention of people who may not otherwise read safety messaging. A partnership to kick off one city's conversation in the run up to World Drowning Prevention Day. https://lnkd.in/eW5uBMUU hashtag #DrowningPrevention

WSI Lifesaver Shatters Paddle Board Record As a Lifeguard trained by Water Safety Ireland, Oisín McGrath often rescued people at risk of drowning and now he has used those lifesaving skills to shatter the paddle board record for crossing from Ireland to Scotland. Oisín completed the 37.5 km crossing in 3 hours and 58 minutes, averaging 9.5 km/hr, and breaking the previous record by almost an hour. Oisín is also a Water Safety Ireland Instructor, a search and rescue helicopter pilot for the Irish Coast Guard, and holder of both senior and masters lifesaving medals in the European and World Lifesaving Championships. A remarkable achievement Oisín and an inspiration to all the current and future Lifeguards trained and assessed by Water Safety Ireland to keep our beaches, rivers, lakes and pools safe. A water safety conversation is all too often put on hold until hot weather tragedies start to happen – and they happen every year. Now is the time to have that conversation with loved ones – and oneself. With thanks to today's Irish Times newspaper for helping to influence a cultural shift in attitudes towards water safety, similar to the changes seen with road safety. https://lnkd.in/e_BBDwqf Together, Let's Bring Drownings Down. #irishtimes #drowningprevention

Drownings by suicide accounted for 38% of all drowning deaths in Ireland over five years. Safe Harbour is an illustrated storybook for children who have been bereaved by suicide. It has been developed by The Irish Childhood Bereavement Network which brought together bereavement experts, including professionals and people with lived experience, to help a child with their grief by encouraging conversation and developing their understanding of death and suicide. It is accompanied by a helpful guide for parents and carers. Safe Harbour is also available in Irish: https://lnkd.in/eg4n8RMB

Ireland’s beautiful blue waters for safe summer swimming… Galway’s Salthill beach provided an appropriately blue background for An Taisce (The National Trust for Ireland) to announce the International Blue Flag and Green Coast Award recipients for 2024. In Ireland, 85 beaches and nine marinas received the world-renowned award that is trusted by millions around the globe. There are several connections between the criteria of Blue Flag awarded beaches and the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN, including SDG 3 - Good health and Well-Being, criterion 31: There must be safety measures in place to protect users. To this end, Water Safety Ireland sits on the Blue Flag Jury and at international level, Blue Flag works in cooperation with many partners including the International Life Saving Federation which has four regions around the globe including International Life Saving Europe, of which Water Safety Ireland is a member. In Ireland, Lifeguards trained and assessed by Water Safety Ireland are employed by local authorities on weekends in June and September until the end of the bathing season and daily in July and August. The Blue Flag is an environmental award made to beaches and marinas throughout the world that demonstrate good environmental standards and have good sanitary and safety facilities. The Green Coast award recognises beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality and natural beauty. Together, we all play a part in providing safe, enjoyable aquatic environments for all. The awards were presented by Hildegarde Naughton TD - Government Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Department of Education. Pictured with Minister Naughton is Cathy Baxter, Director of the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce and Cllr. Eddie Hoare, Mayor of the city of Galway. Also photographed are Galway City Council and Galway County Council representatives and Clean Coasts groups with the Blue Flag and Green Coast Award flag.
