This week is #MedSafetyWeek and IPHA are collaborating with the HPRA to help highlight the importance of preventing side effects and reporting them when they do occur. Reporting a side effect is easy, just click on this link 👉 www.hpra.ie/report #ReportSideEffects #PatientSafety Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA)
Pharmacists, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists all have a key role to play in the cycle of medicines safety. Remaining up to date on emerging safety information is crucial to provide the best advice to patients, as is communicating possible side effects. Delighted to see this announcement by Minister Stephen Donnelly today. Ireland needs to be in line with other European countries, therefore as part of the IPHA General Election Manifesto we called for a doubling of clinical trials in Ireland during the lifetime of the next Government. Clinical Trials are critical in developing new treatments, but they also give patients access to sometimes life-saving medicines. This recognition by the Minister of the importance of increasing the number of clinical trials in Ireland will give patients hope, patients like Patrick who because of a cancer clinical trial won't miss a single precious family moment. You can hear Patrick's story here: https://lnkd.in/e3aXFYvk #InnovateForLife
I want to double the number of clinical trials taking place in Ireland in order to bring Ireland into line with other top European performers, such as Denmark. This would improve patient access to the most advanced and innovative treatments. At present our system for clinical trials is overly complex with duplication and delays across the administrative processes & structures that support their start-up. Difficulties encountered include reaching legal agreement to commence a trial, and varied understanding among stakeholders around roles and responsibilities covering GDPR and data protection legislation. I set up a group to tackle this and received their first recommendations recently. I fully support the recommendations and brought them to Cabinet earlier this week. We are now implementing them. Thanks to Chair Donal Brennan for his work to date and all those involved in the important work of this Group. Let’s give all patients in Ireland faster access to medicines. New medicines can be the difference between losing and keeping your sight. Thankfully, Mary can keep doing what she loves. #LifeBecauseOfNewMedicines

Over recent weeks and months, the IPHA team have been meeting with all political parties to outline our asks for the next government. Today we were invited to attend Sinn Féin’s stakeholder launch of their health manifesto: A Prescription for Change. It was heartening to see the inclusion of some of our asks integrated into their plan including giving clinical leaders a stronger voice in deciding which medicines are available to patients in Ireland and when. With the General Election fast approaching we will continue to call for the next government to commit to a New Medicines Pledge where the Right Medicine will be available at the Right Time for patients in Ireland.
