Stephen Napier, CEO of the Irish Bioeconomy Foundation, kicks off our session on Innovative Flagships: Pioneering Solutions for Dairy in the Circular Bioeconomy. Stephen's presentation on the national multi-purpose bioeconomy pilot facility at Lisheen explores the transformation of biomass residues into high-value products, scaling up and moving Ireland beyond the status quo.

Happy to announce the BioScaleUp project which is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the EU Just Transition Fund Programme 2021-2027, which will help realise the long-term vision of IBF and Tipperary County Council to enable Ireland to transition to a greener future with lower GHG emissions in a Circular Bioeconomy through the piloting and scaling of biomanufacturing. The funding will integrate precision fermentation and green chemistry to enable the conversion of biomass and food processing side streams to products of value ranging from fine chemicals, single cell protein, bioactive, biopolymers, and bioenergy. Transitioning from a former mining site, the Lisheen National Bioeconomy campus is acting as a platform for change through its multi-stakeholder collaborations including BiOrbic, Bioeconomy SFI Research Centre, Technological University of the Shannon, University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University of Galway, industry partners, and members. The JTF funding is building on initial investment and support from Enterprise Ireland and enabled by the infrastructure support of key partners of Tipperary County Council and Tirlán by providing critical momentum for Ireland to accelerate the development of novel process and products for emerging growing markets. It forms part of a wider IBF and BiOrbic strategy for Ireland to be a world leader and a key pillar of the European Circular Bioeconomy ecosystem. #IrishBioeconomy

IBF were delighted to attend last week's ESG in Food Summit in the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise organised by Agri Insider. The event set the landscape for the challenges and opportunities for Irish food companies as they navigate the ESG regulations that is changing food production. Key themes such as CSRD, energy efficiency, sustainable procurement and waste management practices, the latest technologies, real world best practice and financial considerations were discussed amongst expert speakers. Key messages from the summit were that consumer transparency is going to play a crucial role, what will our approach to food waste look like and while there is a concerted effort to decarbonise the food sector in Ireland, economics for primary food producers is still a key issue.

Great few days attending RuralBioUp meeting and #IFIB in Bologna. Some highlights include Stef Denayer presenting on how to overcome scale-up challenges using networks such as Pilots4U by CoPilot. There was a strong Irish presence with Catriona Power FRSA and Elaine Cullinan on the panel discussion highlighting the importance of regions in the bioeconomy.
