Today, we've launched our pre-Budget 2025 submission "Sharpening our Edge". The upcoming Budget presents the Government with an opportunity. The Irish economy has emerged stronger than ever from a period of significant turbulence. The State has both a significant forecasted Budget surplus and is running a significant surplus in our Balance of Payments. We are in the enviable position of being flush with the resources we have built through exporting, rather than borrowing from abroad. Securing our international competitiveness will be dependent on how well we can invest in our critical physical infrastructure, efficiency of regulation and public services, access to talent, and further development of the all-island economy. The Budget is an opportunity to set out a vision for the country we are building in the next five years, rather than a short-term sugar rush. Setting aside €6 billion into funds for the very long-term future is one part of this, but there must also be more immediate ambitions to harness the resources we have available. In our full submission we set out in detail over 75 evidence-based policy recommendations. These policies would drive Ireland’s ability to compete in an increasingly competitive global environment by addressing these major deficits. This document gives a brief overview of some of the key strategic asks. Sharpening our competitive edge is within the gift of the Government. Our celebration of Irish Whiskey Tourism on Wednesday was a resounding success. We would like to thank all those who helped in any way to make it so, and thank our Ibec and Drinks Ireland - Ibec colleagues who joined on the evening. Our Director Eoin Ó Catháin spoke to Joe Lynam on Newstalk Breakfast this morning about the whiskey distillery visitor numbers and much more - be sure to give it a listen here: https://lnkd.in/dxUBwyz

Director of the Irish Whiskey Association (Ibec)

On Wednesday, we celebrated another landmark year for Irish Whiskey Tourism, and a very special anniversary. Our newly-published figures show that over 800,000 visitors took the opportunity to visit a Irish Whiskey distillery or visitor centre in the past year. All our whiskey distilleries can be found at https://lnkd.in/gBXCxQsU, and I encourage you to check them out! We are celebrating 700 years of Irish Whiskey Tradition - in 1324 a medieval manuscript was published in Kilkenny called the Red Book of Ossory which contains the first mention of distillation and aqua vitae or uisce beatha. This, of course, became whiskey. Our tradition dates back seven centuries and we are delighted to see that it's going from strength to strength since then. We gathered at Roe & Co Distillery in Dublin's The Liberties where Manchan Magan gave us incredible insight into the Irish words and phrases associated with our stewardship of the land, the craftsmanship that goes into making Irish Whiskey and the passion we exhibit while enjoying it. Alice Mansergh, CEO of Tourism Ireland, spoke to the upcoming campaign to promote whiskey distillery experiences to the international visitor - from whiskey enthusiasts to the culturally curious. Each distillery has a unique story and personality to share and we are hopeful that more visitors from all over the world can come to Ireland to learn about whiskey from the source! Catherine Toolan, Managing Director of Diageo Brand Homes, in turn allowed us to learn more about Roe & Co - one of the Association's newest distilleries but one with a unique spirit and heart. It was an amazing venue. We had an amazing time in the company of friends, colleagues and well-wishers on Wednesday evening, and I'd like to thank all those who worked so hard on ensuring the event's success. In particular, I'd like to thank the Roe & Co, Tourism Ireland, Alice Public Relations and Red and Gray who put in hours of work to ensure smooth collaboration and cooperation, all of our members who travelled ó chian is ó chóngar to attend, and everyone who attended to support our industry. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine, as was said at the event - there is strength in numbers - and events like Wednesday's show how true it is. P.S. The Red Book of Ossory is available to visit from 29th July in St. Canice's Cathedral in Kilkenny, and the Kilkenny Whiskey Guild has done trojan work on behalf of the sector to make Kilkenny one of Ireland's whiskey capitals. I cannot wait to visit and encourage you all to do the same!
