We own, operate, build and maintain the natural gas network in Ireland and connect all customers to the gas network.

About us

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €2.8bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world. Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation. By working to replace natural gas with renewable gases, such as biomethane and hydrogen, and complementing intermittent renewable electricity, Gas Networks Ireland is supporting Ireland’s journey to a cleaner energy future.

We are proud to see such significant progress made in the greater uptake of BioCNG, a clean fuel and diesel alternative for freight and commercial vehicles. July saw a notable increase in demand for gas in transport with demand for clean burning BioCNG, up 20% month-on-month and 65% year-on-year. These numbers are a testament to the central role gas will play in Ireland’s continued journey towards net zero. #GasDemand #GasDemandGNI #BioCNG #CNG #GasinTransport  https://lnkd.in/eEGWNYBh

Our colleague Padraig Fleming will be joining the panel discussion at the The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) Northern Ireland Conference on Wednesday, September 4th. With the publication of the Irish Government's National Biomethane Strategy and as Northern Ireland implements its Green Growth Strategy, the panel will discuss how the establishment of this new renewable industry will support income diversification for farmers, the creation of green jobs and decarbonisation of many hard to abate sectors. In a cool and relatively dry month, there was a notable increase in gas demand, as wind energy’s contribution to the grid tapered off heading into the height of Summer.  Overall gas demand increased by almost 6% month-on-month from June and by 3% year-on-year from July 2023.  At times during the month, gas powered up to 64% of the country’s electricity, and never dropped below 16%. #GasDemand #GasDemandGNI      Read More- https://lnkd.in/eEGWNYBh

As our summer students wrap up their placements with us this week, we would like to express our gratitude for all their contributions and enthusiasm they showed throughout their time with us in both Cork and Dublin. Internships in Gas Networks Ireland offer a variety of opportunities for students, from on-the-job learning, networking and self-development programmes. Thank you Amy Cronin for giving us a glimpse into the day in the life of a student on our Communications team. #Internship #Back2School

Final Year Food Marketing & Entrepreneurship Student at UCC

I can’t believe that I’m nearly at the end of my final month of placement. Throughout my time at Gas Networks Ireland, I have been granted numerous opportunities to expand my skillset and gain valuable work experience. To mark my placement journey, I decided to film a short day in the life to document one of my working days as a marketing and communications intern at GNI. I am truly sad to be leaving soon, but I am excited to make the most of these last few days before moving on to complete my final year of college.

Our ibelong Family Network hosted “The Magic of Reading" in our Cork and Dublin offices last week, a special event celebrating Irish children's literature. Gas Networks Ireland employees and their children enjoyed a day of interactive activities, games, and even a visit from the Children's Books Ireland Book Doctor who “prescribed” books for the children to read. This event was part of our ibelong Diversity and Inclusion programme, which alongside other four networks promote diversity and inclusion in our organisation. #DiversityandInclusion https://lnkd.in/eYtNqdER

Gas Networks Ireland, in collaboration with Age Action Ireland, recently hosted gardening blitzes in several communities, across Cork and Dublin helping older people maintain their gardens. Our employees, who were joined by volunteers from GMC Utilities Group and Murphys cleared overgrown areas, ensuring safe outdoor spaces for the residents. As a UN SDG Champion, at Gas Networks Ireland we are committed to continuing our work to support community well-being and sustainability through our volunteering network and initiatives in our community. #UNSDG

Imagine turning slurry, sludge, and food waste into 100% renewable energy? A resource so clean and pure that it can seamlessly integrate into Ireland’s national gas grid, providing sustainable gas for your business. At Flogas, we see opportunity where others see waste. – Biomethane is a renewable gas produced from various feed stocks through anaerobic digestion.  – During this process, organic materials break down in oxygen-free tanks (Anaerobic Digesters), generating biogas and digestate. – This natural process also occurs in the environment as organic waste decomposes, releasing methane into the atmosphere.  – To be injected into the gas network, biogas is upgraded to biomethane, meeting the quality standards set by Gas Networks Ireland. – Biomethane serves as a direct, sustainable replacement for fossil-based natural gas, offering an easy and effective path to decarbonisation for natural gas users.
