Last week, I attended the last conference of my PhD. And what a week it was ! 🤩 🚀 The 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress (ECC9), organized by EuChemS (European Chemical Society) and Chemistry Ireland, set in the beautiful city of Dublin, was a success at every level. 🇮🇪 👏 It was a fabulous week filled by a very rich program with plethora of inspiring scientific talks, including two Nobel Laureates, and an amazing young program from the European Young Chemists' Network (EYCN) which dived into key topics such as green chemistry, entrepreneurship, diversity, inclusion, science policy and science communication. The conference was also the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and forge new connections, while getting to know more about the work of many fantastic organizations, from the American Chemical Society and Royal Society of Chemistry to IUPAC, International Younger Chemists Network (IYCN), Beyond Benign—Green Chemistry for a Sustainable Future, DUDE CHEM, Lives in Chemistry from the German Chemical Society (GDCh), Ciencia en el Parlamento, Chemistry World, Agata Communications and many more. ⚛️🧪 And to end this fantastic week, I am deeply honored to be awarded the European Young Chemists’ Gold Medal 2023 for my work on the recycling of rare earth elements. 🌟🥇 It was an immense honor to receive this recognition alongside the brilliant Sara Ferrara, who has been pioneering greener alternatives to circumvent the use of rare earth elements in lighting. I want to congratulate her along side the two winners in the early-career level, Gianluigi Albano and Michael Howlett, and all the finalists for their outstanding contributions. 👏 💫 This is a powerful reminder of how our collective efforts in various fields of chemistry are vital in addressing global challenges. 🌍 🌱 As John Warner aptly said, “Today is the best day to be a Chemist.” 👩🔬 🔬 Here’s to continued innovation and collaboration in our quest for a more sustainable future. Cheers to all who made ECC9 an unforgettable experience! (and keep an eye on the registrations for the #ECC10 which will be co-organized by the KVCV in Antwerp in 2026 ✨ 🇧🇪) #ECC9 #EuChemS #ChemistryIreland #Sustainability #GreenChemistry #YoungChemists #Innovation #Collaboration #ChemistryCommunity

As Floris Rutjes, EuChemS Vice-President said in his address at the closing ceremony of the 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress (ECC9): what a week it was! Such an excellent congress deserved a similarly excellent closing session, which involved two EuChemS award ceremonies. First, Floris Rutjes presented the EuChemS Award for Service to Robert Parker from the Royal Society of Chemistry for his long-standing support in championing EuChemS's goals. Next, came the exciting announcement of the two Gold and Silver medallists of the EuChemS Young Chemists' Award. In the PhD category, the silver medal was received by Sara Ferrara, and the gold medal was presented to Marie Perrin. In the Early Career Researcher category, Michael Howlett is the silver medallist, and Gianluigi Albano received the Gold Medal. The honours were presented by Gianluca Farinola, Floris Rutjes and Maximilian Menche. We would like to congratulate to the awardees, as well as all finalists, who all presented excellent chemistry. A presentation from Thomas Vranken followed the awards, giving a little taste of what is to come at the next EuChemS Chemistry Congress #ECC10 which will be co-organised by KVCV in Antwerp, Belgium in 2026. At the end, Chemistry Ireland president Pat Guiry formally closed #ECC9. We were delighted to attend such an outstanding event, and we are looking forward to seeing you all in Antwerp, in 2026. We would like to kindly thank everyone who contributed to the success, and attended this excellent event!

Commercial Director at Asynt (Chemistry equipment providers enabling laboratories to become safer, more sustainable and efficient) Ex porphyrin chemist.
What an amazing week it’s been at the 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress (ECC9). I don’t think I’ve ever been to such a busy chemistry conference. Absolutely super. Today is going to be electrifying with some fabulous talks geared around #Electrocatalysis and #Electrochemistry. ElectroReact has certainly been very popular on the Asynt stand. With heating and stirring all possible through a conventional stirrer hotplate, the platform allows you to use your own electrodes too. ⚡️ Massive thanks again to EuChemS (European Chemical Society) and Chemistry Ireland for putting together an amazing week of chemistry. Until next time……. #ECC9 #EuchemS2024
