We are working towards net zero emissions by 2040 through sustainable and regenerative approaches. Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Week which took place on September 20-29 promotes sustainable development and raises awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals. Our Sustainability Leadership Plan sets out our key ambitions and the actions we will take, as they relate to our three pillars planet, place and people. We have been active in the Scottish renewable energy sector for almost a decade and recently, we signed a memorandum of understanding with UHI Shetland that will establish collaboration and cooperation as part of our Stoura floating offshore wind farm project. The main areas of focus will be education, data sharing, research and long-term environmental monitoring. We are both committed to working together to develop the skills required to deliver on the Scottish Government’s climate action targets. #ESBNetZeroFuture

Solar is playing an increasingly important role in Ireland's efforts to decarbonise its electricity system and provide clean energy for homes, farms and businesses. At ESB, our current pipeline of projects has the capacity to generate over a third of Ireland's 5.5GW peak demand for electricity with clean energy in the future. One of those projects is the Bullstown solar farm in County Meath with our development partner, Greencells Gmbh. The project is near completion and is expected to be fully operational by January 2025. Bullstown Solar Farm will generate 12.5MWp of clean electricity, generating enough capacity to power more than 2,000 homes. A community benefit fund will also be made available for local community groups in 2026. #ESBNetZeroFuture

We have always recognised the vital part that the arts play in social and economic progress, engaging communities and in innovation and creativity. This has been the case in generations gone by and will be the same for generations to come. We were recently awarded Best Arts and Cultural Sponsorship 2024 at The Irish Sponsorship Awards. This award recognises our Brighter Future Arts Fund and its role in supporting artists and arts organisations in the delivery of creative projects promoting awareness of climate change and inspiring positive action around sustainability and the energy transition. #ESBNetZeroFuture

As part of our strategy to transition to net zero, we aim to have a transformative impact on SDGs 7, 9 and 13 and contribute to SDGs 8,12 and 15. To mark Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Week which took place on September 20-29 we held a lunchtime seminar from Colm ONeill, Head of Energy, Utilities and Telecoms at KPMG Ireland. Colm presented findings from the ‘Powering Tomorrow’ study of Irish attitudes to the energy transition. He was joined by ESB panellists Peter O'Shea, Lisa Browne, Mark Madigan and Helen O'Keeffe, who shared insights on the importance of public engagement and communication in their business area as we work to deliver a sustainable future energy system. Today marks an important step on our sustainability journey as we announce a pioneering green hydrogen pilot project with ESB that will see our data centre power control and administration building in Dublin be powered by zero emissions green hydrogen power. The landmark pilot project is the first time that Hydrogen Fuel Cells will be used to provide electricity to a Microsoft data centre in Europe, supplying up to 250kW of clean energy to Microsoft’s Dublin campus over an eight-week period. The groundbreaking pilot is part of a series planned by ESB in 2024 and 2025 to showcase the versatility of hydrogen fuel cell technology in different power applications. The pilot is the first step in demonstrating the potential impact that hydrogen energy can have in helping to decarbonise the strategically important data centre sector in Ireland.
