Sleep disorders are not only distressing for sufferers and their sleep partners, they are an underappreciated public health problem with far reaching effects on population health and economic well-being. Sleep disorders can reduce productivity in the workplace, effect learning in school, and up to one third of road traffic accidents are caused by sleep deprivation. These are findings published in a series of articles in The Lancet in 2022 which look at various sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnoea and insomnia. Conditions grouped under 'Sleep Disorders' are diverse, affecting adults and children and are dealt with across a range of specialities including Ear, Nose & Throat, Cardiology, Neurology, Respiratory, General Practice, Dentistry and Orthodontics. This is a promising time for sleep disorder sufferers with a growing recognition of sleep, or lack thereof, as its own specialist area within specialities; increasing research for treatments; wider availability of home-monitoring devices enabling the assessment of sleep in a real-world environment and cross-speciality co-operation to assist in ensuring the best possible available treatment and outcome for each patient. With digital health one of the foci at the All Ireland Nursing Festival 2024, it was wonderful to meet and get feedback from nurses in various disciplines, on how Care-Connect's working models of digitally integrated care could enhance their workload and improve patient outcomes. The session on digital health and virtual wards presented by Health Service Executive's Chief Nursing and Midwifery Information Officer, Loretto Grogan and Dr Catherine McCabe, Associate Professor School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin was especially thought provoking around systems for nursing-appropriate data capture, data integration and real-time inter-discipline data access. #allirelandnursingfest24
