Rebuilding lives after brain injury. Empowering people to live to their full potential. That's what we do.

About us

Acquired Brain Injury Ireland provides community based neuro-rehabilitation services to those who have acquired a brain injury. The organisation helps rebuild lives that have been shattered by the trauma of brain injury, through placing a critical emphasis on client-centeredness, quality, effectiveness and value for money. Rehabilitation and clinical support are key aspects to the service. Approximately 19,000 people acquire a brain injury in Ireland each year and face a dramatically altered life thereafter. People with acquired brain injury (ABI) progress at different rates, and may need to access services at different points in time as their needs change. Within each stage of rehabilitation a range of different service providers is involved, which must be coordinated. Once back in the community the emphasis is on more extended activities of daily living, integration, and return to work or education. Interventions focus on enhanced participation, improved quality of life, psychological adjustment and carer stress. Acquired Brain Injury Ireland is filling a vital service gap, in collaboration with statutory bodies.

  • We would like to give a huge shout-out to Chris Cummins for supporting Acquired Brain Injury Ireland (ABI Ireland) in this year's #IrishLife #Dublin Marathon on 27th October 2024. Chris was only 38 years old when he had a subarachnoid haemorrhage while doing a Park Run in October 2021. With the support of #ABIIreland and his family, Chris managed to get his life back on track following his stroke and wants to help brain injury survivors across Ireland to rebuild their lives. Thank you for your support, Chris! Read more about Chris' story at https://lnkd.in/esKeKFuE

  • Are you looking to get a taste of the #hike life? Mecca Gym will be joining our Local Services Manager, Fiona Doyle and her friend Kalinda Healy for their next hike this Sunday, 28th July 2024. They will take on the beautiful Croghan Trail in #Arklow, #Wicklow and all are welcome! Taking place this Sunday morning, the hike will be across an easy grade 4km trail, making it suitable for all the family (even for those with robust buggy wheels), and a perfect morning out. • Did you know today is #WorldBrainDay? There is still so much we don't know about the brain and how neurological conditions, such as a brain injury, impact people's lives. To find out more, the Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI) and its partner Alliances in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have come together to coordinate and circulate My Neuro Survey, a public survey exploring the experiences of people impacted by neurological conditions, which aims to inform future advocacy and service improvements locally and nationally. If you or someone you care for has been impacted by an acquired brain injury, please consider taking 20 minutes to fill out the survey. Your feedback would be much appreciated 🙏👇 https://lnkd.in/em8G6Wcb #MyNeuroSurvey

  • Our Interim Director of Service Operations, Catherine Lacey was delighted to attend an event on Thursday, 18th July, called 'Stakeholder Engagement with the Department of Children, Equality, Integration, Disability and Youth.' The event was coordinated by the Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI) and many member organisations were represented, including our organisation. It was a great opportunity for organisations to discuss relevant issues for services and people served in advance of the budget, and to meet with various #Government representatives and HSE representatives. This event also coincided with the launch of the #DFI’s pre budget submission, which happened earlier in the week. Here's a lovely photo of Catherine with Anne Rabbitte TD, Minister of State for Disability in the Department of Health & Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth

  • We would like to wish our colleague, Matt Powell farewell and the best of luck on his new chapter. Matt has been our Community #Fundraising Co-Ordinator for four years and has created and managed several successful campaigns, such as Woof Walkers, Step Up For Brain Injury and Bake For Brain Injury. His contribution has significantly impacted our donor reach and enabled us to help more brain injury survivors. You may recognise Matt from our TikTok channel, as he is the star of many of our videos. Matt is finishing up with ABI Ireland today to pursue an incredible opportunity teaching English in Japan. Matt, we wish you the best of luck and thank you for all you have done for the organisation. You will be missed! #BrainInjury #BrainInjurySurvivors

  • We would like to share an inspirational story about a rowing crew for people with intellectual and cognitive disabilities. History was made at last month’s Fermoy Regatta in #Cork, as on the Blackwater that weekend, it is believed that for the first time ever in the country, there was a category in a regatta for individuals with learning and intellectual disabilities. Crew Blu, a team from Tribesmen Rowing Club in #Galway, was established by Sabrina Carroll and Peter Cassidy, after they were approached by a parent of a young man living with an acquired brain injury who wanted to row. Since setting up the crew, Tribesmen Rowing Club have seen around 30 to 35 people participating in the programme. This is a first for rowing and it is great to see such #inclusiveness active in #sports. Read more about the rowing crew at https://lnkd.in/eNCDbXKF
