Laudabiliter

Laudabiliter adalah sebuah bulla kepausan yang dikeluarkan pada tahun 1155 oleh Paus Adrianus IV yang merupakan satu-satunya orang Inggris yang pernah menjadi paus. Keberadaan bulla ini dalam sejarah telah diperdebatkan oleh para ahli, karena tidak ada salinan yang masih tersisa, tetapi beberapa ahli mengatakan bahwa dokumen ini telah disebutkan semenjak awal abad ke-13. Bulla ini memberikan hak kepada Raja Angevin Henry II dari Inggris untuk menyerbu dan memerintah Irlandia dan memberlakukan reformasi Gregorius di gereja Kristen yang semi-otonom di Irlandia. Richard de Clare ("Strongbow") dan pemimpin-pemimpin invasi Irlandia oleh Norman (1169–71) lainnya mengklaim bahwa Laudabiliter telah memberikan kepada mereka hak untuk menyerang Irlandia.

Raja Inggris dari masa Henry II (1171) hingga Henry VIII (1541) menggunakan gelar "Penguasa Irlandia" dan mengklaim bahwa gelar tersebut telah diberikan oleh penerus Paus Adrianus, Paus Alexander III.

Empat abad kemudian, Gereja Inggris menyatakan kemerdekaannya dari paus dan menolak wewenang Tahta Suci, sehingga Inggris memerlukan dasar hukum baru untuk melegitimasi kekuasaan raja Inggris di Irlandia. Pada tahun 1542, Undang-Undang Tahta Irlandia ditetapkan oleh Parlemen Inggris dan Irlandia. Undang-Undang tersebut mendirikan Kerajaan Irlandia dengan Henry VIII sebagai Raja Irlandia. Walaupun ia adalah raja Irlandia pertama dengan nama "Henry", nomor yang digunakan adalah "VIII" dan bukan "I".
