At GIF Innovation Day 2024, Hans Patuwo, COO of Gojek, shared an inspiring perspective on how technology and culture should go hand-in-hand. Early in Gojek's journey, it faced significant challenges, including sudden backlash from drivers over changes in incentives. Rather than just addressing the symptoms, Gojek digged deeper to identify and solve the core issues. By understanding the underlying causes, Gojek know known as GoTo Group developed solutions that integrated technology with the local culture of their driver community. Hans emphasized that true innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum; it needs to align with the values and realities of the people it serves. “We can’t use technology as an excuse to overlook local wisdom,” he said. “It’s not the end goal but a powerful tool that must be used thoughtfully to bring about meaningful change.” There are a lot of tools that we can use to do the RCA, the fishbone tool for example. It helps us to dig deeper into the reason on why something is happening and get the core cause. The future of retail in Indonesia was the topic of a Leader's Forum yesterday at Aloft Jakarta Wahid Hasyim, organized by Yango Tech and the Indonesia Retail Association — APRINDO (Asosiasi Pengusaha Ritel Indonesia). Four prominent retail leaders from Indonesia participated in an insightful panel discussion, ‘Omnichannel in Retail: What Does the Future Hold,’ which covered a range of issues. The key points discussed were: 🔷 Customer Behavior: Majority of customers still prefer shopping in physical stores, with limited shift towards online shopping. Bapak Yudi Hartanto, Borma Group, emphasized that 95% of their customers prefer shopping in physical stores and, currently, their behavior does not indicate a significant shift towards online shopping. 🔷 Logistics Challenges: Issues with third-party logistics providers, such as lack of control over visibility and frequent delays, highlighting the need for better logistics solutions and real-time tracking. For example, Bapak Giri Purwito, Trans F&B and Metro, mentioned several issues with relying on 3PL providers, including a lack of control over visibility and tracking and frequent delays that do not meet customer expectations. 🔷 Customer Engagement: Development of apps for placing orders, loyalty programs, and additional product information to enhance the shopping experience. Use of customer data to determine suitable products for online sales and promote others for in-store traffic. 🔷 Omnichannel Strategies: Combination of in-house management and partnerships with aggregators, while some prefer developing their own systems for better control. Hesitation to adopt omnichannel due to high online platform fees conflicting with low-priced business models.
