Kang Iwan, a 31-year-old from Kampung Darajat, Garut, has been awarded the Local Hero Inspiration Award by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) at the 2024 Festival for Pollution and Environmental Damage Control (PPKL). As a community partner of Star Energy Geothermal Darajat (SEGD), KLHK recognized Iwan for his dedication to environmental conservation through the INSAN SMART program (Innovative Friends of the Forest Synergy for Protecting Darajat Nature). Kang Iwan initiated this program by founding the Madu Darajat Forest Farmers Group (KTH), which integrates reforestation with local economic empowerment. INSAN SMART aims to improve the quality of forests in the upstream area of the Cimanuk River Basin (DAS) and the welfare of the surrounding community. Through this program, the forest areas managed by SEGD are not only rehabilitated but also used for honey bee cultivation. This unique initiative not only helps in pollination and biodiversity but also creates a superior product, honey, that provides positive economic impacts for the local community. The success of INSAN SMART demonstrates that environmental conservation and economic empowerment can go hand in hand, resulting in long-term benefits for the ecosystem and society. This award not only recognizes Kang Iwan's hard work and the Madu Darajat Forest Farmers Group but also underscores SEGD's significant role in supporting environmental conservation innovation. SEG takes a proactive approach to geohazard risk management. By conducting systematic and periodic assessments and monitoring, SEG can identify, evaluate, predict, and actively take preventive and mitigation measures to reduce the risk of natural disasters resulting from geohazards. SEG actively demonstrates its commitment to community safety by coordinating and collaborating with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and other stakeholders.
