In environmental conservation, a profound gap exists between the wealth of data detailing our world’s changing ecosystems and the actionable insights needed to protect them. This is where the newly launched Mongabay Data Studio comes in! The MDS bridges the divide between environmental science and action by developing impactful tools, creating insightful data journalism, and connecting a network of credible partners. By integrating environmental, social and satellite data from reputable sources, MDS aims to make complex information accessible and actionable. The Mongabay Data Studio offers the opportunity to: ☑ Engage in novel research to create scalable tools that activate and inform audiences. ☑ Empower journalists to integrate accurate sources of scientific data as context and evidence within their news narratives. ☑ Build a collaborative global network of partners and people to mobilize. The official launch of Mongabay Data Studio took place on Feb 20, 2024, a milestone event that brought together more than 50 guests, including journalists, conservationists, technologists, and supporters from a range of Spanish and international organizations. Several partners, like Trase - Intelligence for sustainable trade, Vizzuality and the World Resources Institute, have collaborated with Mongabay to build the existing tools. Others involved are the individuals behind our environmental data journalism including Mongabay’s global network of journalists and Vizzuality’s team of technologists, designers and scientists. Given Mongabay Data Studio’s early phase, the potential for impact is immense, but so is the need for support. If you are interested in helping sustain impactful data journalism, there are two excellent ways you can do so with Mongabay. First, consider donating, which directly helps us continue to build new functionality and onboard new partners for Mongabay Data Studio. Second, subscribe to Mongabay’s newsletter to get the latest environmental news from nature’s frontline delivered right to your inbox. Learn more about the MDS: https://lnkd.in/gZWYQEtf. Our founder Rhett Ayers Butler shares Mongabay's story and insights on his journey with Brodie Hopkins of the Protect the World podcast.

Mongabay.com-Indonesia: Mongabay adalah penyedia ragam berita konservasi dan sains lingkungan berbasis non-profit.

I recently had the pleasure to speak with Brodie Hopkins for “Protect the World”. Here is a summary of 3 questions & answers from the conversation. Hopkins: Pick one person, living or dead, and live their entire life from start to finish. You pause your life right now, live that whole life, experiencing everything they’ve experienced, and then come back to your life with all of their memories. Who do you choose? Me: I’d choose one of the first humans to set foot in either Australia or Madagascar to witness what the world looked like back then. It would’ve been terrifying but amazing to see megafauna that had never encountered humans before. Between the two, I’m partial to Madagascar—so let’s go with that. Hopkins: What is Mongabay's funding model since you don’t rely on advertising? Me: Mongabay started as a for-profit, relying on advertising. For-profit models typically monetize traffic through ads or subscriptions. However, by 2015, we transitioned to a non-profit (https://mongabay.cc/rczybi), with funding primarily from donations and grants. Ads account for less than 1% of our budget. This shift allowed us to prioritize impact over traffic. For instance, we once had substantial traffic from Facebook, but it was mostly low-quality—people visited briefly without substantively engaging. A few years ago, we shifted our focus to platforms that fostered deeper engagement. After this decision, our traffic dropped significantly, but the time spent on Mongabay in aggregate actually increased. Under a for-profit model, this loss would have affected ad revenue, but as a non-profit, it made sense. Ultimately, the focus on deeper engagement among key audiences aligns with our mission to maximize impact. Hopkins: For the first 10 years, you ran Mongabay on your own. Now you have over 100 staff & 1000 contributing journalists globally. What changed? Me: I started Mongabay as a side project to raise awareness about tropical forests. It gained popularity, and by 2004, I quit my full-time job to focus on it. In 2008, I hired our first staffer, Jeremy Hance. I had ideas for scaling Mongabay’s impact that advertising could not support: Specifically an Indonesian-language environmental news service. So I formed the non-profit to pursue that. With this decision, I knew I would have to give up doing what I loved - reporting - to instead become a manager and fundraiser. I didn’t know whether I’d be good at those things, but I understood that building an organization to provide opportunities for journalists to report from Nature’s frontline would ultimately have a much greater impact than me continuing to focus on writing articles. With a lot of hard work, Mongabay got to where it is today. ℹ Protect the World is dedicated to the people and orgs making the world a better place. Every month, Hopkins connects with an NGO that's addressing inequality or biodiversity loss. 🎙 Listen at https://mongabay.cc/3Zm5I9 📷: Madagascar 🇲🇬 2004; Waigeo 🇮🇩 2024

Since 2006, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has worked with local groups to screen documentaries about apes in dozens of communities adjoining protected areas where Cross River gorillas are still found. The films aim to build knowledge about apes and support for conservation; conservationists say film screenings, which are still a novelty in rural areas, attract a broader audience than radio shows, town hall meetings or other outreach methods. Though they live close to ape habitats, for many people in these rural communities, films are as close as they will come to encountering the rare and cryptic animals that live nearby. Jane Goodall had some nice things to say about Mongabay's work during a conversation with Climate One in San Francisco on September 16th. “We know we’re going through dark places on the planet today… I tell everybody, if you really want to know the truth about a particular issue, go to Mongabay.” - Jane Goodall Jane used the event to premiere her "Vote for Nature" video, a short version of which I shared with her and producer Jeff Horowitz's permission here: https://lnkd.in/gxEd7CJj Climate One's Greg Dalton moderated the conversation. Jane offered inspiration 🌈 and many more insights. See the full recording of the event in the link.

Ghost fishing gear or fishing debris is the biggest plastic polluter in our oceans. Fishing nets and other equipment represent 10% of all plastic lost at sea. Lost and abandoned fishing debris is deadly to marine life, so different initiatives are looking for solutions to this problem. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g9rTeNEm. The Indigenous Zoró people in the Brazilian Amazon have struck a balance between generating income and keeping their forest standing, thanks to the Brazil nut. They harvest the fruit and sell it through the COOPAVAM farmers’ cooperative, which guarantees fairer prices than dealing with the traditional network of middlemen. The success of this sustainable model since 2018 saw most Zoró villages abandon their previous ties to illegal loggers operating in their territory. But with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing economic hardship, many villages fell back on these links, compounding existing threats to their forests posed by illegal mining and cattle ranching.
