Reviving Heritage Through Mandarin Learning 📚 On July 24, 2024, CNA News Taiwan reported on the innovations employed by Chinese youth in Indonesia to promote Mandarin education. Around 13 million of Indonesia's ethnic Chinese population have struggled with Mandarin fluency due to a 32-year ban. Recently, the arrival of many Chinese companies has reignited interest in learning Mandarin. This surge in demand has spurred a group of young entrepreneurs to create educational platforms. One highlighted figure is Cecilia Ong, Chief Operating Officer of Cakap. Despite being born during the Mandarin language ban, she became fluent in Mandarin by living in Batam and studying in Singapore. Founded in 2014, Cakap offers courses in multiple languages, including Mandarin, to meet this growing demand. With approximately 53.3% of Indonesians interested in learning Mandarin, Cakap also teaches Chinese culture and provides local information for students planning to study in Taiwan or China.
