About us
The Hungarian Centre of Excellence for Molecular Medicine – HCEMM - is a gamechanger organization which catalyzes reforming changes in the research culture and makes an impact in the regional development of Hungarian knowledge regions. The organisational and management model ensures autonomy and scientific excellence with an international evaluation system. Research groups are pursuing in cross-cutting fields and are reviewed every 5 years in order to ensure scientific excellence. HCEMM focuses on and supports molecular medicine-oriented research activities targeting key, highly prevalent ageing-related non-communicable diseases. HCEMM was created by the union of the University of Szeged, the Semmelweis University and the Biological Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. They were joined by the National Research, Innovation and Development Office representing the Hungarian Government as project coordinator and by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) as an advanced scientific institution. Supported by EU Programme: H2020-EU.4.a. - Teaming of excellent research institutions and low performing RDI regions. Project starting date was 1 April 2017.

Proud to spotlight Gábor Apjok from our team, a true pioneer in phage therapy. Gabor recently authored an insightful article for the Phage Directory, discussing the global impact and potential of bacteriophages. His piece delves into how these viruses can be utilized across national and scientific boundaries to fight AMR: https://lnkd.in/dW5BtTgD #phagetherapy #AMR #innovation

Back from #EUSEA24 last week. Thank you for the hospitality of Ilia State University and the opportunity to learn new approaches and perspectives in science communication!

Yesterday marked the start of the #EUSEA2024 science communication conference in Tbilisi, Georgia. After a very nice introduction to the cultural heritage of Georgia on the previous day, presentations began in earnest in the morning. HCEMM is now richer with a treasure trove of ideas on how to tackle the modern issues of science communication and on how to reach audience in novel and creative ways. Also: caught two very nice presentations from #EMBL , our strategic partner institue.

Next week, May 15th, HCEMM is taking Science Café to Budapest again. From 18:00 at Magvető Café, two of HCEMM's scientists are going to give short talks on their field - this time, the overarching topic will be cancer. Csaba Bödör, head of the HCEMM-SU Molecular Oncohematology Research Group will be introducing the audience to the role of genetics in the personalized treatment of haematological cancers. Lőrinc Pongor, head of the Cancer Genetics and Epigenomics Core Group will offer a glimpse into the evolutionary forces at work within tumors through his talk. With over 5600 online views on the presentations of the previous Science Café, and over 800 people already showing interest in the one coming up next, we're looking forward to an amazing event! (Photo from previous Science Café. Talks will be in Hungarian.)
