Rólunk
Biological barriers protect our body from harmful effects. They also block the penetration of therapeutics and make pharmacological treatments of different organs, like the brain difficult. In addition, they may be damaged in illnesses, like diabetes, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s diseases, or acute pancreatitis. Our goal is 1. to develop novel devices and models for the investigation of biological barriers 2. to enhance drug penetration across biological barriers by new techniques 3. to protect barriers in disease conditions We use human cell based culture models of the blood-brain, the intestinal, the lung, the bronchial, the nasal and the cornea barriers. In addition to static culture models we also use organ-on-chip devices with flow to mimic the physiological conditions. Currently we test peptides to open or cross barriers and nanoparticles targeted for the transporters of the blood-brain barrier. Our group is expert in cellular toxicity assays, barrier function and drug penetration measurements, preparation, characterization and testing vesicular nanoparticles.

During the month of July we had a great experience to accept Natalia Grzesik to our laboratory as a visiting student. Natalia arrived to work with us from the Egle Solito laboratory, from the Queen Mary University of London. She obtained knowledge about the primary endothelial cell and astroglia isolations, in vitro BBB modeling and microeletronic chip device assembly. We wish all the best for her during her PhD/MS studies!

Heartfelt congratulations to Anna Kocsis, Biology MSc student in our laboratory for her newest achievements! Anna received two scholarships just recently: the Gedeon Richter Centennial Foundation's Research Student Scholarship and the University Research Scholarship from the University of Szeged. Her advisors are Maria Deli and Fruzsina Walter.

The 2024 Summer conference season was also busy for the Group. Our team participated at three international conferences across the globe: in the USA, in Austria and in Turkey! - New London, NH, USA, June 8-9, 2024: The Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) "Advancing Translational Research: New Technologies, Insights, and Treatments for Neurological Disease" was organized by Dr. Benjamin Gastfriend and our former PhD student Ana Raquel P. Santa Maria, Ph.D.. June: 9-14: The Barriers of the CNS Gordon Research Conference (GRC), Genetics to Physiology and Bench to Bedside was organized by Prof. Matt Campbell and Prof. Dionna Williams. Maria Deli and Fruzsina Walter presented their work in the form of an oral presentation, while Gergő Porkoláb had a poster on both conferences. Gergő was also elected to be the next co-chair of the GRS along with Dr. Siday Aydin from the Richard Daneman lab, UC San Diego. - June 25-29, 2024: This years Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) conference was held in Vienna. PhD student Judit Vigh and two of our Master Students, Nóra Kucsápszky and Anna Kocsis were presenting their latest work as a poster presentation. - June 25-28, 2024: Maria Deli and Attila Hunyadi, head of the Institute of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Szeged, also our long-time collaborator visited Ankara, Turkey at the end of June, 2024 and served as plenary speakers at the 14th International Symposium on Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Ruya Topal, our former visiting student was also presenting. Congratulations to all presenters! https://lnkd.in/d9A82--A https://lnkd.in/d32xw63A https://fensforum.org/ https://isops-ankara.org/
