【#PolyUTech 💡】Hong Kong has seen around 50,000 new cases of #stroke annually, with many patients experiencing varying degrees of impaired physical mobility. #PolyU has achieved another breakthrough in rehabilitation device development. The Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton is the first-of-its-kind multimodal robot for ankle-foot rehabilitation specifically designed for stroke patients with hemiplegia, which helps improve the motor function of their lower limb and walking ability. Powered by Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the device enables telerehabilitation for remote management of patients’ rehabilitation progress and allows them to undertake self-help rehabilitation exercises at home. Therapists can remotely monitor the rehabilitation progress of multiple patients. Developed by a research team led by Dr Xiaoling Hu, Associate Professor of PolyU | Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton is an innovative multimodal wearable robot for ankle-foot rehabilitation that integrates the advantages of exoskeleton, soft pneumatic muscles, tactile sensory feedback and neuromuscular electrical stimulation technology in one system, that is planned to be commercialised next year. Translation of lab-based clinical trials to real clinical services is challenging. I am excited to share our new investigation on the feasibility and rehabilitative effectiveness of a self-help telerehabilitation program using the mobile exoneuromusculoskeleton (a hybrid neuromuscular electrical stimulation and soft robotic system by BME PolyU and Thecon Technology (HK) Limited) implemented in the routine practice of the Community Rehabilitation Service Support Centre (CRSSC) of the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong. The patients successfully learnt the operational skills of the device after tutorials and completed the training under remote professional supervision. Despite the challenging circumstances posed by the 4th and 5th waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong, stroke patients participating in the study were able to sustain regular training at home, even when the clinical professionals were impacted by the infection. The novel self-help and telerehabilitation program has been favorably received by both patients and rehabilitation professionals.
