Soap Cycling was thrilled to welcome the Group Communications team from Jardine Matheson as volunteers for our soap recycling programme. In a short period of time, they saved 17L of liquid soap and 4kg soap bars from landfill. The reprocessed soaps could support 147 underprivileged for a month. Meanwhile their participation also gives strong support to our pre-employment training programme, the SOAPER Work, given to our trainees who are the persons with learning difficulties. It provides opportunities to our trainees to learn soft skills like teamwork and communication so as to increase their self-esteem and life satisfaction. Let's co-create a better community! About us
Soap Cycling is a nonprofit organization that works with the hospitality industry to collect, process, and distribute lightly used soap bars and bottled amenities. These life-saving items are then distributed to disadvantaged communities around the world, particularly Asia. Our three-part mission: 1. Improve Sanitation & Hygiene We aim to improve sanitation and hygiene in underprivileged regions, with a particular emphasis on reducing child mortality rates; pneumonia and diarrhea are the leading causes of death for children under the age of five. Simply washing hands with soap is one of the most effective ways to prevent children from suffering from these diseases. 2. Green Living & Waste Reduction Over two million bars of soap are thrown away each year by hotels in Hong Kong alone. By collecting this soap, Soap Cycling is helping to eliminate thousands of pounds of chemical waste from our landfills each month. We also seek to help the public develop a greater awareness of up-cycling and maintaining a greener lifestyle for the betterment of the environment. 3. Education & Empowerment The majority of Soap Cycling is composed of students. We offer internships in all aspects so students may gain hands-on experience and share their insights and skills. They are also infused with an appreciation for corporate social responsibility, social enterprise, and the importance of giving back in society. The MEY (美) Program The MEY (美) Program is a new initiative being implemented in Hong Kong with a chief focus on empowering Hong Kong's disadvantaged youth and elderly who will get a chance to lead and be empowered, plus a fair wage for their time and work. It was a pleasure to work with the Visa team at their office. Their commitment and friendliness were truly inspiring. During our activities, they worked seamlessly with our elderly helpers to co-create Soap Arts. These crafted pieces will be donated to the Box of Hope, serving as Christmas gifts for underprivileged children. Time passed quickly amidst laughter and productive 'SOAPER' work. Hot summer is not a barrier to social inclusion After 2 hours working hard for recycling soap, the volunteers from CEIC Data visited our elderly neighbours in Kwai Chung Estate immediately. They distributed the soap reprocessed by themselves together with fruits. The whole session is filled with joys and meaning. We all know the most important of home visits is not the "items" but is "connection". The elderly deserve respect and care even if it is a chit-chat, because loneliness can cause negative effects on the overall well-being. We are glad to have met friends from different Marriott hotels. In addition to soap recycling with Marriott, we also collaborate with Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel to reuse used pillowcases for packing the reprocessed soap bars delivered to the Philippines. The disadvantaged community in the Philippines is in huge demand of free soap and hashtag #SoapCyclingPhilippines is devoted in the soap distribution and hygiene education there. In one box of soap, there will be several thousands of soap bars. The soap bags (that is pillowcases) make the distributions to be more manageable. Two hours of being #HandsOn to provide soap to children in the Philippines for one year. 💛 These 16 volunteers from AMERICAN EAGLE OUTFITTERS INC. spent their Friday morning supporting the incredible Soap Cycling mission to improve and save lives through hygiene. Their efforts scraping clean 16kg of hotel soap means 33 children from impoverished families will have this life-saving resource for a year. And two Hong Kong families will have a huge bottle of carefully poured liquid soap to last a month. Let’s Co-create a Better Community! To answer the call of Earth Day, with assistance of our elderly helpers, we joined hands with HandsOn Hong Kong, @chromecaresa, and China Everbright Limited to reprocess the used plastic dispensers collected from hotels. Their pump heads were removed, and bottles were emptied out. Instead of ending in landfills, the used plastic bottles become recyclable, and portion of them are reused to store the soap we collected for coming distributions. The soaps collected in the session were immediately taken to give the elderly neighbours living in Kwai Chung Estate which is next to our workshop. We aim to keep our elderly neighbours socially connected on the soap recycling platform. Elderly are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation – and it can have a serious effect on health. They deserve our concern and respected living after decades of work and contribution to the community. Due to their rich life experience, working and chatting with them are fruitful and interesting. Last but not least, a big thank you to the China Everbright Limited volunteer team for their hard work and devotion. Thank you for your hard work, giving the vocational training opportunities to our trainees, and recycling soap with us during #EarthMonth.
We would like to thank everyone who volunteered with us during #EarthMonth. These activities form part of our ongoing efforts to combat #plasticpollution and wastage in our local communities. Here are some highlights across #Asia ex-Japan: 🌊 Following an educational tour of the largest water catchment in #Singapore with Waterways Watch Society, we rolled up our sleeves and helped collect litter from Singapore's waterways. • ~50kg of litter collected 🧼 Our colleagues in #HongKong participated in Soap Cycling’s recycling workshop alongside youth with learning disabilities. All of the liquid soap recycled during the session will be donated to the beneficiary families of one of our grant partners, OneSky. • Over 250 used plastic dispensers saved from landfills • ~5L of liquid soap recycled ♻️ We also joined Feeding Hong Kong in their warehouse for an afternoon of community service and education on #foodwaste and #foodpoverty in Hong Kong. • Over 900kg of food packed, offsetting ~1,800kg of CO2 emissions • ~2,200 meals made available to the community We believe everyone can be a steward for the environment and will continue to engage our people and encourage positive #wastereduction and #recycling habits. Most recently, we piloted a food waste recycling scheme in our Hong Kong office and installed a #composting machine in our Singapore office. As a global financial services group, we have pledged to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions for our own operations by 2030.
